The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. New exam for 2026-27: 52 multiple-choice questions, five free-response questions on sight and project passages, and 2 % from in-class checkpoints.
AP Latin has a new course and exam for 2026-27: 52 multiple-choice questions on sight and syllabus passages at 50 %, five free-response questions (short answer, translation, short essay and two essays on project passages) at 48 %, and in-class course project checkpoints at 2 %. The syllabus is Pliny's Letters and Vergil's Aeneid. The sheet has a box for each scored part with the point maximums from the course and exam description.
It is a small exam (4,336 students in 2025) with the lowest mean of any AP (2.84) and, on the old exam, a 1 band of 16.2 %. The College Board's July 2025 post says Latin's standards will be set afresh in June 2026 because of the changes.
How the Latin exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice52 questions · 50 %
- 20 discrete sight questions (18 %), short sets on sight and syllabus prose and poetry (12 %), long sets on syllabus prose and poetry (20 %). (1 hour 5 minutes)
- Section II, Q1: Short answer6 to 8 subquestions · 10 % (8 points)
- Comprehension and grammar on a passage. (about 15 minutes)
- Section II, Q2: Translation15 segments · 10 % (15 points)
- Literal translation scored by segment. (about 15 minutes)
- Section II, Q3: Short essay2 subquestions · 10 % (8 points)
- Analysis of a passage with evidence from the Latin. (about 25 minutes)
- Section II, Q4 and Q5: Project passage short essays2 subquestions each · 9 % each (11 points each)
- Essays on prose and poetry passages studied in the in-class course project. (about 30 minutes each)
- Course project checkpoints2 tasks · 2 %
- A draft summary and an interpretation of a project passage, scored by the teacher and submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio. (in class)
The College Board exam page lists the multiple-choice breakdown and the five free-response questions; the 2026-27 course and exam description adds the weights (10, 10, 10, 9, 9 and 2 %) and the points (8, 15, 8, 11, 11 and 27 for the project component including checkpoints). The page's own summary says 50 % and 50 % plus 2 %, which does not sum; the description's 50-48-2 split is what the sheet uses.
The four project passages are examined twice: in the checkpoints during the year and in questions 4 and 5 on exam day. The old exam's two translations and two long analytical essays on Caesar and Vergil are gone with the syllabus change.

Latin has the lowest mean score of any AP exam, 2.84 in 2025, and a pass rate under 60 %. More students scored a 2 (25.2 %) than a 4 (16.7 %), and 16.2 % scored a 1, down from 20.5 % in 2024. Both years were on the old Caesar-and-Vergil exam. The College Board's July 2025 post lists Latin among the five least satisfying AP courses (5.98 of 10) and notes it is scheduled for standard setting in June 2026.
The 2027 results will be the first on the new exam and the first under the new standard; the columns here describe the exam that was replaced.

What a Latin score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | Any passing score earns LNW 2321 (3 credits). |
| UT Austin | A 5 earns LAT 506, 507 and 511K. A 4 earns LAT 506 and 507. A 3 earns LAT 506. |
| University of Washington | A 4 or 5 earns LATIN 305 and 307 (5 credits each). A 3 earns LATIN 103. |
Latin credit follows the language pattern at Texas, one course per score point, and jumps at 4 at Washington, where a 3 earns an introductory course and a 4 two literature courses. Florida gives one course regardless.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the Latin curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are the site's default estimate and, for Latin, the least grounded on the site: the exam is new, its points and weights come from the course description rather than a released exam, and the College Board has said it will set the standard in June 2026. The 2025 distribution on the old exam, with a mean under 3, suggests the real lines may sit lower than these.
Use the sheet to see how the parts combine; do not plan around a score until the first results on the new exam are published in July 2027.
Questions about the Latin exam
- What is on the new AP Latin syllabus?
- Pliny's Letters (the eruption of Vesuvius, ghosts, letters to Trajan and Calpurnia) and Vergil's Aeneid (books 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11 and 12 in excerpt), plus teacher-chosen prose and poetry, per the 2026-27 course and exam description. Caesar is no longer on the syllabus.
- How is the translation question scored?
- By segment: 15 segments, 15 points, per the course and exam description. It is 10 % of the exam.
- What are the course project checkpoints?
- Two in-class tasks on the four project passages, a draft summary and an interpretation with evidence, scored by the teacher and submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio. Together they are 2 % of the exam score.
- Why does the College Board page say 50 % plus 50 % plus 2 %?
- The page's summary rounds the free-response section to 50 %; the course and exam description gives the question weights as 10, 10, 10, 9 and 9 %, which sum to 48 %, with the checkpoints at 2 %.
- When will the new exam's score standard be set?
- The College Board's July 2025 post says AP Latin is scheduled for standard setting in June 2026, necessitated by the changes to the course and exam.
