Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural comparison. The College Board has not published point scales for the three free-response tasks, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.

All AP exams

AP Spanish Language and Culture is the largest AP world-language exam (182,670 students in 2025) and it has been rebuilt for May 2027. The old four-task free-response section (email, essay, conversation, cultural comparison) is replaced by a project presentation and Q&A on a topic released in January plus an argumentative essay, and the exam moves fully into Bluebook. Listening and reading keep half the score.

The College Board has not published point scales for the new free-response tasks, so the sheet takes each of them as a percentage of its rubric and the two multiple-choice parts as counts. The College Board publishes two distributions for this exam, one for everyone and one for students who learned Spanish mainly in school, and the gap between them is on this page.

How the Spanish Lang exam is built

Section I, Q1: Project presentation1 spoken task · 20 %
A presentation on what the student learned researching the project topic released in January. (3 minutes to prepare, 3 to present)
Section I, Q2: Project Q&A4 recorded questions · 15 %
Unseen questions about the student's project, answered aloud. (40 seconds per answer)
Section I, Q3: Argumentative essay1 written task · 15 %
An essay built on print and audio sources that disagree. (55 minutes, with two chances to hear the audio source)
Section II, Part A: Listening25 questions · 25 %
Multiple choice on audio sources. (40 minutes)
Section II, Part B: Reading30 questions · 25 %
Multiple choice on print sources. (40 minutes)

The College Board page and the 2026-27 course and exam description give the structure above: three free-response tasks at 20, 15 and 15 % in 65 to 70 minutes, then 55 multiple-choice questions at 50 % in 80 minutes. The project presentation and Q&A are new; students research a topic released in January and submit a Personalized Project Reference through the AP Digital Portfolio by 30 April 2027, which they can use during the speaking tasks.

The change moves weight toward speaking: 35 % of the score is now spoken, against 25 % under the old format (conversation and cultural comparison). The essay keeps its 55 minutes and its print-plus-audio sources.

Worked Spanish Lang examples

Listening 20/25, reading 24/30, presentation 70 %, Q&A 60 %, essay 70 %
20.0 + 20.0 + 14.0 + 9.0 + 10.5 = 73.5, an estimated 4, 0.5 points short of a 5 at 74. One more listening question (1.0) would cross.
22/25, 27/30, 80 %, 75 %, 80 %
22.0 + 22.5 + 16.0 + 11.3 + 12.0 = 83.8, a clear 5.
Weak speaking: 22/25, 26/30, 40 %, 40 %, 70 %
22.0 + 21.7 + 8.0 + 6.0 + 10.5 = 68.2, a 4. Strong listening and reading with a poor presentation still clears the 4 line comfortably, because the two multiple-choice parts are half the score.

How Spanish Lang scores were distributed

Only 2.6 % of Spanish Language students scored a 1 in 2025, and 85.0 % scored 3 or higher, the third-highest pass rate of any AP after Chinese Language and Research. The College Board's standard group, students who did not report regularly speaking or hearing Spanish outside school or living a month in a Spanish-speaking country, is about 28 % of the entry and did a little less well: 80.5 % at 3 or higher and 15.3 % at 5 against 21.9 % overall.

The heritage effect here is small compared with Chinese and Japanese, where the standard group's 5 rate is less than half the overall figure. Spanish is the one AP language where most of the entry is the standard group's peers.

What a Spanish Lang score is worth for credit

Language credit scales with the score more steeply than any other AP subject: at Texas and Washington a 5 is worth three or four courses and a 3 one course. A 5 can satisfy a whole language requirement. Note that Washington's page withholds credit from native speakers on several languages; it does not print that note under Spanish.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the Spanish Lang curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 74 % for a 5, 62 % for a 4, 48 % for a 3 and 36 % for a 2, are the site's language-exam estimate and are more provisional than usual: the May 2027 exam has new tasks whose rubrics are not published in points, and the 2025 distribution was earned on the old format. The lines reproduce the shape of that distribution, a tiny 1 band and a top band of a fifth, on the new composite.

The College Board sets cut scores after each exam and does not publish them. For the first year of a revised exam, allow more than the usual three points either side of a line.

Questions about the Spanish Lang exam

What is the project on the 2027 AP Spanish exam?
A research topic released in January. Students prepare a Personalized Project Reference, submit it through the AP Digital Portfolio by 30 April, and use it in two speaking tasks on exam day: a 3-minute presentation (20 %) and four recorded questions answered in 40 seconds each (15 %).
Is the conversation task gone?
Yes. The College Board page for May 2027 lists three free-response tasks: project presentation, project Q&A and argumentative essay. The old email reply, conversation and cultural comparison are not on it.
What is the standard group in the distribution?
Students who did not indicate that they regularly speak or hear Spanish, or lived a month or more where it is spoken. In 2025 they were 50,891 of 182,670 students and 80.5 % scored 3 or higher.
How much credit does a 5 earn?
Up to four courses: SPN 601D, 610D, 311 and 314 at Texas, SPAN 201 to 203 at Washington (15 credits), SPN 2200 and 2201 at Florida.
Is the exam on paper or in Bluebook?
The College Board page says the world language exams transition to a fully digital format in Bluebook from May 2027.
Why does the sheet ask for percentages on the speaking tasks?
Because the College Board has not published point scales for the new tasks. Enter the share of the rubric you expect; the weights (20, 15, 15 %) are the published ones.
