Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural comparison. The College Board has not published point scales for the three free-response tasks, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.

All AP exams

AP Italian Language and Culture is the smallest of the AP language exams, with 2,241 students in 2025, and shares the May 2027 format of Spanish, French and German: a project presentation and Q&A, an argumentative essay, and 55 listening and reading questions. The sheet takes the two multiple-choice parts as counts and the three free-response tasks as percentages of their rubrics, because the task point scales for 2027 have not been published.

Its results are the best of the four European languages at the top: 24.6 % earned a 5 overall and 15.9 % of the standard group, with a 3-or-higher rate of 75.2 %.

How the Italian exam is built

Section I, Q1: Project presentation1 recorded talk · 20 %
A presentation of the student's research on the topic released in January. (3 min to prepare, 3 min to speak)
Section I, Q2: Project Q&A4 questions, unseen · 15 %
Spoken answers about the research project. (40 s each)
Section I, Q3: Argumentative essay1 essay · 15 %
A position supported from print and audio sources with different viewpoints. (55 min, audio played twice)
Section II, Part A: Listening25 questions · 25 %
Audio-based multiple choice. (40 min)
Section II, Part B: Reading30 questions · 25 %
Text-based multiple choice. (40 min)

The College Board page for May 2027 lists the shared European-language structure: presentation 20 %, Q&A 15 %, essay 15 %, listening 25 %, reading 25 %; 65 to 70 minutes of free response and 80 of multiple choice; project topic in January, Personalized Project Reference due 30 April 2027; fully digital in Bluebook.

With a fifth of the score on a prepared presentation, the January topic release matters more for a small-cohort exam like Italian, where many candidates are self-taught or in one-section programs.

What a Italian score is worth for credit

Identical in shape to French: one course per score point at Texas and Washington, a doubling at 4 at Florida. Washington's native-speaker exclusion applies.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the Italian curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet (74, 62, 48, 36 %) are the shared language-exam estimate. Italian's 2025 distribution, with a quarter of students at 5 and under 8 % at 1, is the most generous of the four European languages, so these lines may be slightly strict for it; on an exam of 2,241 students the College Board's real boundaries, which it does not publish, can move several points between years.

The 2027 format's task rubrics are not published in points; allow a wide margin either side of a line in the first year.
