Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural presentation. Point scales for the four free-response tasks are not published, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.

All AP exams

AP Japanese Language and Culture has the same six-part May 2027 structure as Chinese: a project presentation and Q&A, a story narration and an email response at 50 %, listening and reading at 50 %. Listening and reading go in as counts. The four free-response tasks go in as percentages of their rubrics, since no point scales for the 2027 tasks have been published.

Its two published distributions are the most polarised of any AP exam. Overall, 43.3 % of the 3,245 students in 2025 earned a 5. In the standard group, students who learned Japanese mainly in school, 12.4 % earned a 5 and 33.7 % earned a 1.

How the Japanese exam is built

Section I, Q1: Project presentation1 recorded presentation · 20 %
Findings from the January project topic. (3 min prepare, 3 min speak)
Section I, Q2: Project Q&A4 unseen recorded questions · 15 %
Spoken answers on the research project. (40 s per answer)
Section I, Q3: Story narration1 typed story · 7.5 %
A narrative built from a four-picture sequence. (30 min shared with Q4)
Section I, Q4: Email response1 typed reply · 7.5 %
A reply to an email from a friend or community member. (shared)
Section II, Part A: Listening25 items · 25 %
Audio-based multiple choice, including conversations. (25 min)
Section II, Part B: Reading30 items · 25 %
Text-based multiple choice, including correspondence. (40 min)

The College Board page for May 2027 lists four free-response tasks in 40 to 45 minutes (presentation 20 %, Q&A 15 %, story narration 7.5 %, email response 7.5 %) and 55 multiple-choice questions in 65 minutes (listening 25 in 25 minutes, reading 30 in 40). The project topic is released in January and the Personalized Project Reference is due 30 April 2027; the exam is fully digital in Bluebook.

The writing tasks are typed, and the exam has been computer-delivered for years; the 2027 change is the move to Bluebook and the project tasks replacing the conversation and cultural presentation.

Worked Japanese examples

Listening 20/25, reading 24/30, presentation 70 %, Q&A 65 %, narration 65 %, email 70 %
20.0 + 20.0 + 14.0 + 9.8 + 4.9 + 5.3 = 73.9, an estimated 4, 0.1 points short of a 5 at 74. One more reading question would cross.
12/25, 15/30, 45 %, 40 %, 45 %, 50 %
12.0 + 12.5 + 9.0 + 6.0 + 3.4 + 3.8 = 46.7, an estimated 2, 1.3 points short of a 3. Half the standard group scored 1 or 2 in 2025; this is the shape of those results.

How Japanese scores were distributed

Japanese is a two-humped exam. Overall in 2025, 43.3 % scored a 5 and 17.8 % scored a 1, with the 4 the rarest score at 11.3 %. The standard group, 44 % of the entry, is the mirror image: 33.7 % at 1, the highest 1 rate of any published AP group, and a mean of 2.54. The overall 5 rate fell from 49.1 % to 43.3 % in a year.

The College Board's July 2025 post lists Japanese second from the bottom for student satisfaction (4.07 of 10). The standard-group figures are the ones a classroom learner should compare against.

What a Japanese score is worth for credit

Japanese credit mirrors Chinese at all three universities: a 5 earns four courses at Texas and 10 credits at Florida, and Washington withholds credit from native speakers and does not promise placement. For a standard-group student, a 3 (30.2 % of that group) earns one course everywhere.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the Japanese curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet (74, 62, 48, 36 %) are the shared language-exam estimate. For Japanese they are a compromise between two very different populations: the overall distribution would put the 5 line low, the standard group's would put every line high. They are estimates; the College Board does not publish cut scores, the 2027 task rubrics are unpublished in points, and the exam has 3,000 students, so the real boundaries can move.

Read a result near a line as either score, and a standard-group student should expect the sheet to be optimistic at the top.

Questions about the Japanese exam

Why is the AP Japanese distribution so split?
The published 2025 figures show 43.3 % at 5 overall but 12.4 % in the standard group, which excludes students who regularly speak or hear Japanese or lived a month in Japan, and 33.7 % of that group scored a 1. The College Board publishes both and does not comment on the gap.

How many students take AP Japanese?
3,245 in 2025, of whom 1,431 were in the standard group, per the College Board's distribution PDF.
What credit does a 3 on AP Japanese earn?
JPN 2230 (5 credits) at Florida, JPN 601D at Texas, JAPAN 133 at Washington.
Why does the Japanese sheet take percentages on the free-response tasks?
The College Board has not published point scales for the 2027 tasks. Enter your expected share of each rubric; the weights are the published ones.
