Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural comparison. The College Board has not published point scales for the three free-response tasks, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.

All AP exams

AP French Language and Culture is the second-largest AP language exam (19,639 students in 2025) and takes the same new shape as Spanish for May 2027: a project presentation and Q&A, an argumentative essay, and 55 multiple-choice questions on listening and reading. Point scales for the three new tasks are not on the College Board page, so the sheet asks for each as a share of its rubric; listening and reading are entered as counts.

French sits in the middle of the language exams by results: 14.0 % earned a 5 in 2025 against 21.9 % for Spanish and 54.9 % for Chinese, and the 3 is the most common score.

Worked French examples

Listening 18/25, reading 22/30, presentation 65 %, Q&A 60 %, essay 65 %
18.0 + 18.3 + 13.0 + 9.0 + 9.8 = 68.1, an estimated 4, 6 points from a 5.
15/25, 18/30, 50 %, 50 %, 55 %
15.0 + 15.0 + 10.0 + 7.5 + 8.3 = 55.8, an estimated 3 with 8 points of margin. The most common French result in 2025 was a 3; this is what it looks like on the sheet.

How French scores were distributed

French's distribution is 3-centred: 34.5 % of all students and 38.1 % of the standard group scored a 3 in 2025. The standard group, students who learned French mainly in school, is 73 % of the entry, a far larger share than for Spanish (28 %) or Chinese (26 %), so the overall and standard figures are close. Among standard-group students only 8.8 % earned a 5.

The mean held at 3.20 in both years and the 3-or-higher rate rose a point to 73.5 %. The College Board's July 2025 post lists French among the five AP courses students rated least satisfying (5.92 of 10).

What a French score is worth for credit

French credit climbs with the score at Texas and Washington, one course per point from 3 to 5, and Florida doubles the credit at a 4. Washington is explicit that native speakers get no credit for the French exam, which is also its rule for German, Italian, Chinese and Japanese.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the French curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 74, 62, 48 and 36 %, are the site's language-exam estimate, shared with Spanish, German and Italian, and provisional for the same reason: the 2027 tasks are new and their rubrics are not published in points. On the 2025 distribution a 3 band of a third and a top band of 14 % sit comfortably inside these lines. The College Board does not publish cut scores.

For the first year of the revised exam, allow more than the usual three points either side of a line.
