The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.
AP English Literature and Composition asks for three essays in two hours, each scored on a 6-point rubric, plus 55 multiple-choice questions on five passages of fiction, drama and poetry. The sheet weights the essays at 55 % and the multiple choice at 45 %, the same split as AP Lang.
Where Lang reads nonfiction, Lit reads literature, and the third essay is the one students remember: an open prompt answered with a work of the student's own choosing. In May 2025, 416,531 students sat the exam and 74.2 % scored 3 or higher.
How the AP Lit exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice55 questions · 45 %
- Five sets of 8 to 13 questions, each on a passage of prose fiction, drama or poetry; at least two prose and two poetry passages every year. (1 hour)
- Section II: Poetry analysis1 of 3 essays · 55 % shared by the three essays
- A literary analysis of a given poem. (2 hours for all three)
- Section II: Prose fiction analysis1 of 3 essays · shared
- A literary analysis of a given passage of prose fiction or drama. (about 40 minutes recommended)
- Section II: Literary argument1 of 3 essays · shared
- A concept, issue or element examined in a work of fiction the student selects; the College Board advises a work of the quality read in class. (about 40 minutes recommended)
The College Board exam page for May 2027 is explicit that the essays use analytic rubrics rather than the earlier holistic ones: 1 point for a thesis, up to 4 for evidence and commentary, 1 for sophistication, on each of the three. It also promises a consistent range of passage difficulty from year to year.
Unlike Lang there is no reading period and no synthesis of sources; the two hours of Section II are writing time. The multiple-choice section has ten more questions than Lang's (55 against 45) in the same hour, so each is worth less: 0.82 composite points against 1.0.

Worked AP Lit examples
- 40/55 multiple choice, 13/18 essays
- 32.7 + 39.7 = 72.4, an estimated 4, 1.6 points short of a 5 at 74. One more essay point (3.1 composite) would cross the line; two more multiple-choice answers would not.
- 48/55, 15/18
- 39.3 + 45.8 = 85.1, a clear 5. Three essays at 5 of 6 with strong multiple choice is the typical shape of a 5.
- 30/55, 9/18
- 24.5 + 27.5 = 52.0, an estimated 3 with 6 points of margin. Three essays at 3 of 6 (thesis plus thin evidence) and a little over half the multiple choice passes.
How AP Lit scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 16.2% | 13.7% |
| 4 | 26.9% | 26.9% |
| 3 | 31.0% | 31.8% |
| 2 | 15.9% | 16.5% |
| 1 | 10.0% | 11.1% |
| 3 or higher | 74.2% | 72.4% |
| Mean score | 3.24 | 3.16 |
| Students | 416,531 | 389,272 |
Lit's distribution moved gently between 2024 and 2025, unlike Lang's. The 5 share rose from 13.7 % to 16.2 %, the 3-or-higher rate from 72.4 % to 74.2 %, and the mean from 3.16 to 3.24. The 3 is the most common score in both years, at about 31 %.
Lit students earned a 5 more often than Lang students in 2025 (16.2 % against 13.4 %) even though Lang's pass rate was almost identical. Both exams are read on the same 6-point essay rubric, so the difference is in who takes which course, not in the paper.

What a AP Lit score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns LIT 2120 (3 credits, general-education H and N). A 4 or 5 earns ENC 1101 and LIT 2120 (6 credits), which adds the writing course and State Core C. |
| UT Austin | A 3 earns E 314T. A 4 or 5 earns E 316P instead. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns ENGL 106 (5 credits); 10 credits if both AP English exams are at 3 or higher. |
Lit is the AP English exam that can earn literature credit rather than only composition credit: Florida's LIT 2120 and Texas's E 316P are literature courses. At Florida the composition course only arrives with a 4, the reverse of its Lang policy, where composition comes first.

How the AP Lit curve on this sheet is estimated
The estimated cutoffs, 74 % for a 5 and 60 % for a 4, are two points above the Lang estimates because Lit's 2025 distribution has a slightly larger top band and the essays are scored on the same 6-point rubric. They are reconstructions; the College Board does not publish cut scores and resets them every year by equating the new form against old ones.
The essay box takes a total out of 18, so one essay point moves the composite by about 3.1 and one multiple-choice question by 0.8. A result within three points of a line should be read as either score.
Questions about the AP Lit exam
- Can I use any book for the third essay?
- Any work of fiction that fits the prompt. The College Board's guidance is to use a work of the quality read in an AP class. Poetry does not qualify for question 3; it has its own question.
- How is the Lit multiple choice different from Lang's?
- Lit has 55 questions on five literary passages (at least two prose, two poetry) with no writing-revision questions. Lang has 45 on nonfiction, about half of them writing questions.
- What does the sophistication point reward?
- The sixth point on each essay rubric, given for an argument that explores complexity or tension, situates the work in a broader context, or is written with a notably vivid and persuasive style.
- Is there a reading period in Section II?
- No. The two hours are writing time for all three essays. Lang has a 15-minute reading period for its synthesis sources; Lit does not need one.
- What do Lang and Lit together earn?
- At Washington, 10 credits of ENGL 106. At Florida and Texas the courses differ: Lang maps to composition, Lit to literature, so a student with both can hold both kinds of credit.
