AP Spanish Literature and Culture is not a language exam but a literature course examined in Spanish, built on a required reading list. The exam has three scored sections: 15 multiple-choice questions on audio at 10 %, 50 on readings at 40 %, and four free-response tasks at 50 %, each scored separately for content and for language. The sheet takes the two multiple-choice counts and the free-response total out of 32.
It is a small exam (27,266 students in 2025) with a 3-centred distribution: 37.7 % scored a 3 and only 9.1 % a 5, the lowest 5 rate of any AP language exam.
How the Spanish Lit exam is built
- Section IA: Multiple choice, audio15 questions · 10 %
- Three sets: an author interview, a recited poem not on the list (played twice), and a presentation on a literary topic. (20 minutes)
- Section IB: Multiple choice, reading50 questions · 40 %
- Six sets of 7 to 10 questions on works from and beyond the required list, one passage of criticism, and one paired set. (1 hour)
- Section II: Short-answer questions2 questions · 12 of 32 points
- Text explanation (identify author and period, trace a theme) and text-and-art comparison. Each 3 points content, 3 points language. (about 15 minutes each)
- Section II: Essays2 questions · 20 of 32 points
- Analysis of a single text's genre and context, and a comparison of a listed text with an unlisted one. Each 5 points content, 5 points language. (about 35 minutes each)
The College Board page for May 2027 lists the structure above, and the 2025 scoring statistics show the double scoring: every free-response task has a content score and a language score, 3 and 3 for the short answers, 5 and 5 for the essays, 32 points in all. The 2025 means were higher on language than on content for all four tasks.
Unlike the language exams, Spanish Literature was not restructured for 2026-27; the page carries no revision notice. The reading list, not fluency, is what the reading section tests: six sets include works students are expected to know.

Worked Spanish Lit examples
- Audio 10/15, reading 35/50, free response 20/32
- 6.7 + 28.0 + 31.3 = 65.9, an estimated 4. A 5 at 72 needs 6 more points: four free-response points, or eight reading questions.
- 12/15, 42/50, 26/32
- 8.0 + 33.6 + 40.6 = 82.2, a clear 5.
- Language carries content: 9/15, 30/50, 16/32
- 6.0 + 24.0 + 25.0 = 55.0, an estimated 3. Sixteen free-response points could be 3, 3, 5 and 5 on language with half marks on content, which is the pattern in the 2025 scoring statistics.
How Spanish Lit scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 9.1% | 10.2% |
| 4 | 23.6% | 23.7% |
| 3 | 37.7% | 33.1% |
| 2 | 20.8% | 21.6% |
| 1 | 8.8% | 11.4% |
| 3 or higher | 70.3% | 67.0% |
| Mean score | 3.03 | 3.00 |
| Students | 27,266 | 26,442 |
Spanish Literature has the lowest 5 rate of the AP language and literature exams, 9.1 % in 2025, and a 3 band that holds more than a third of students (37.7 %). The 3-or-higher rate rose from 67.0 % to 70.3 % in a year as the 1 band shrank from 11.4 % to 8.8 %. The College Board's July 2025 table lists it at 67 % and 70 %.
Many of its students have already taken Spanish Language, where 21.9 % earned a 5. The drop to 9.1 % is the difference between proficiency and literary analysis of a set list.

What a Spanish Lit score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 or 4 earns SPW L0001 (3 credits, general credit with no UF course equivalent). A 5 earns SPW 3100 and SPW L0001. |
| UT Austin | A 5 earns SPN 601D, 610D, 311, 314 and 327C. A 4 earns SPN 601D, 610D, 311 and 314. A 3 earns SPN 601D and 610D. |
| University of Washington | SPAN 298 for any passing score: 15 credits for a 5, 10 for a 4, 5 for a 3. |
Texas treats Spanish Literature as one step above Spanish Language at every score: a 3 here earns two courses where a 3 on the language exam earns one, and a 5 adds a literature course (327C). Florida is the reverse, with general credit until a 5. Washington scales credits with the score without naming a literature course.

How the Spanish Lit curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 60 % for a 4, 46 % for a 3 and 34 % for a 2, are estimates reconstructed from the 2025 distribution and the double-scored free-response scale. With 37.7 % of students at 3 and 9.1 % at 5, the 3 band is wide and the 5 line high. The College Board does not publish cut scores.
A free-response point is worth 1.56 composite, a reading question 0.8 and an audio question 0.67. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the Spanish Lit exam
- How are the Spanish Literature essays scored?
- Twice: a content score and a language score for each task. The short answers are 3 and 3, the essays 5 and 5, per the 2025 scoring statistics. The sheet takes the total out of 32.
- Do I need Spanish Language first?
- The College Board does not require it. The exam assumes the proficiency the language course builds and adds the reading list; most students take Literature second.
- Is the recited poem on the reading list?
- No. The College Board page says the poem in the audio section is not on the required list, and it is played twice; the interview and presentation are played once.
- Did the 2026-27 world-language revision change this exam?
- No. The revision notice appears on the language and culture exam pages; the Spanish Literature page describes the same three-section format with no change note.
- What credit does a 3 earn?
- Two courses at Texas (SPN 601D and 610D), general credit at Florida (SPW L0001) and 5 credits of SPAN 298 at Washington.
