Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural presentation. Point scales for the four free-response tasks are not published, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.

All AP exams

AP Chinese Language and Culture has the highest 5 rate of any AP exam, 54.9 % in 2025, and the widest gap between its two published distributions: among students who learned Chinese mainly in school, 23.0 % earned a 5. The May 2027 exam is revised like the other languages, with a project presentation and Q&A plus two short writing tasks at 50 %, and listening and reading at 50 %.

For the four free-response tasks the sheet asks for a percentage of each rubric, because the College Board has published their weights but no point scales; listening and reading are counts. Chinese and Japanese share this six-part structure; the European languages have five parts.

How the Chinese exam is built

Section I, Q1: Project presentationone presentation, recorded · 20 %
What the research on the January topic found, presented in Mandarin. (3 minutes preparation then 3 minutes speaking)
Section I, Q2: Project Q&A4 recorded questions not known in advance · 15 %
Follow-up questions on the project, answered aloud. (40 seconds to answer each)
Section I, Q3: Story narrationone written story · 7.5 %
A story composed from four pictures, typed in characters. (30 minutes for both writing tasks)
Section I, Q4: Email responseone written reply · 7.5 %
An answer to an email from a friend or member of the community. (shared with Q3)
Section II, Part A: Listening25 questions · 25 %
Audio reports, conversations, instructions and presentations, some with a chart. (25 minutes)
Section II, Part B: Reading30 questions · 25 %
Articles, correspondence, literary texts and promotional material, some with a chart. (40 minutes)

Two things on the College Board page separate Chinese from the European languages. Its free-response section has four tasks rather than three (the story narration and email response survive from the old exam, each at 7.5 %), and its listening part is 25 minutes rather than 40. The project presentation and Q&A are the 2027 additions; the project topic is published in January and students upload a Personalized Project Reference by 30 April 2027.

The whole exam runs about 1 hour 50 minutes in Bluebook, the shortest of the AP language exams. The course and exam description says task scripts are provided in both simplified and traditional characters.

Worked Chinese examples

Listening 21/25, reading 25/30, presentation 75 %, Q&A 70 %, narration 70 %, email 75 %
21.0 + 20.8 + 15.0 + 10.5 + 5.3 + 5.6 = 78.2, an estimated 5.
15/25, 18/30, 50 %, 50 %, 50 %, 55 %
15.0 + 15.0 + 10.0 + 7.5 + 3.8 + 4.1 = 55.4, an estimated 3. A plausible standard-group result; 28.8 % of that group scored a 3 in 2025.

How Chinese scores were distributed

More than half of all AP Chinese students earn a 5, and 89.2 % scored 3 or higher in 2025, the highest pass rate of any AP exam. The standard group, 26 % of the entry, tells a different story: 23.0 % at 5, 69.0 % at 3 or higher and 18.4 % at 1, which is three times the overall 1 rate. The two groups are almost two different exams.

The overall mean of 4.11 is the highest of any AP exam's total group. The College Board's July 2025 table lists Chinese at 89 % in both years.

What a Chinese score is worth for credit

Chinese earns the most credit of any AP language at the top: four courses at Texas and 10 credits at Florida for a 5. Washington's page carries two warnings, no credit for native speakers and no automatic placement, that matter for an exam where most 5s come from heritage speakers.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the Chinese curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet (74, 62, 48, 36 %) are the shared language-exam estimate and fit Chinese badly in one respect: with 54.9 % of all students at 5, the real composite boundary for a 5 must sit low enough that more than half the entry clears it, which the published distribution shows but no released material quantifies. The lines here are closer to the standard group's shape. They are estimates; the College Board does not publish cut scores, and the 2027 task rubrics are not published in points.

Read a result near a line as either score, with a wider margin than usual in the first year of the revised exam.

Questions about the Chinese exam

What are the four free-response tasks on the 2027 AP Chinese exam?
Project presentation (3 minutes, 20 %), project Q&A (four recorded questions, 15 %), story narration from four pictures (7.5 %) and an email response (7.5 %), with 30 minutes for the two writing tasks, per the College Board page.
Why is the 5 rate so high?
The published distribution shows 54.9 % at 5 overall and 23.0 % in the standard group, which excludes students who regularly speak or hear Chinese or lived a month in a Chinese-speaking place. About three quarters of the entry is outside the standard group.
Do heritage speakers get college credit?
Florida and Texas do not print a restriction. Washington's page says no credit is awarded to native speakers of Chinese.
Is the listening section shorter than on other languages?
Yes: 25 questions in 25 minutes, against 40 minutes on the European exams, per the College Board pages.
Why does the Chinese sheet take percentages on the free-response tasks?
The College Board has not published point scales for the 2027 tasks. The weights (20, 15, 7.5, 7.5 %) are published; enter your expected share of each rubric.
