The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: a project presentation and Q&A replace the conversation and cultural comparison. The College Board has not published point scales for the three free-response tasks, so enter each as a percentage of its rubric.
AP German Language and Culture is a small exam (4,213 students in 2025) with the same May 2027 format as Spanish and French: project presentation, project Q&A and argumentative essay at 50 %, listening and reading at 50 %. Enter listening and reading as the number right; enter the three free-response tasks as the percentage of each rubric you expect, since the College Board has published their weights but not their points.
German's two published distributions diverge more than French's: 21.3 % of all students earned a 5 but only 8.8 % of the standard group, and the standard group's 3-or-higher rate was 62.4 % against 71.5 % overall.
How the German exam is built
- Section I, Q1: Project presentationspoken, recorded · 20 %
- What the student learned from researching the January topic, delivered as a presentation. (3 minutes to prepare and 3 to deliver)
- Section I, Q2: Project Q&Afour recorded prompts · 15 %
- Unseen questions on the student's research, answered aloud in turn. (40 seconds per response)
- Section I, Q3: Argumentative essayone written argument · 15 %
- Print and audio sources that disagree; the student argues a position with evidence from both. (55 minutes including two listens of the audio)
- Section II, Part A: Listening25 items · 25 %
- Audio sources, some paired with a chart or image. (40 minutes)
- Section II, Part B: Reading30 items · 25 %
- Print sources across the six course themes. (40 minutes)
The College Board page for May 2027 gives the same structure as the other European language exams: three free-response tasks at 20, 15 and 15 % in 65 to 70 minutes, then 25 listening and 30 reading questions at 25 % each, 40 minutes a part. The project topic is released in January and the Personalized Project Reference is due 30 April 2027; the exam is fully digital in Bluebook.
The old four-task free response ended with the May 2026 exam, so released free-response questions from before 2027 do not match the sheet.

Worked German examples
- Listening 19/25, reading 23/30, presentation 70 %, Q&A 65 %, essay 70 %
- 19.0 + 19.2 + 14.0 + 9.8 + 10.5 = 72.5, an estimated 4, 1.5 points short of a 5 at 74. Two more reading questions (0.83 each) would cross.
- 14/25, 17/30, 50 %, 45 %, 50 %
- 14.0 + 14.2 + 10.0 + 6.8 + 7.5 = 52.5, an estimated 3.
How German scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2025 (standard group) | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 21.3% | 8.8% | 26.1% |
| 4 | 24.5% | 22.8% | 20.3% |
| 3 | 25.7% | 30.9% | 23.4% |
| 2 | 17.6% | 23.6% | 20.1% |
| 1 | 10.8% | 13.9% | 10.1% |
| 3 or higher | 71.5% | 62.4% | 69.8% |
| Mean score | 3.28 | 2.89 | 3.32 |
| Students | 4,213 | 2,753 | 4,185 |
German's overall 5 rate fell from 26.1 % to 21.3 % between 2024 and 2025 while its 3-or-higher rate rose from 69.8 % to 71.5 %. The standard group, about two thirds of the entry, scored well below the whole: a mean of 2.89 against 3.28, and nearly 14 % at 1. The College Board's July 2025 post lists German among the five AP courses with the lowest student satisfaction (5.68 of 10).
With only 4,213 students the distribution moves more from year to year than the large exams'. Treat single-year changes with care.

What a German score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns GER 2200 (3 credits). A 4 or 5 earns GER 2200 and GER 2240. |
| UT Austin | A 4 or 5 earns GER 506, 507 and 612, or GER 604 and 612. A 3 earns GER 506 and 507, or GER 604. |
| University of Washington | A 5 earns GERMAN 201, 202 and 203 (15 credits). A 4 earns 201 and 202. A 3 earns 201. No credit for native speakers of German. |
German is the one language on this page where Texas does not distinguish a 4 from a 5: both earn the full first-year sequence plus GER 612. Washington keeps its three tiers, and Florida adds a course at 4. Washington withholds credit from native speakers.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.
How the German curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet (74, 62, 48, 36 %) are the shared language-exam estimate, applied here to an exam whose overall distribution is close to Spanish's at the top (21.3 % at 5) but heavier at the bottom (10.8 % at 1). They are provisional for the 2027 format, whose task rubrics are unpublished in points, and the College Board does not publish cut scores.
On an exam of 4,000 students the real boundaries can move several points between years; allow more than the usual margin either side of a line.
Questions about the German exam
- What changed for the May 2027 AP German exam?
- The free-response section: a project presentation (20 %) and Q&A (15 %) on a January-released topic replace the email reply, conversation and cultural comparison; the argumentative essay (15 %) stays. Listening and reading are unchanged at 25 % each. The exam is fully digital.
- Why is the standard group's 5 rate so much lower?
- The College Board's standard group excludes students who regularly speak or hear German or lived a month in a German-speaking country. In 2025, 8.8 % of that group earned a 5 against 21.3 % of all students.
- How much credit does a 3 earn?
- One course at Florida (GER 2200) and Washington (GERMAN 201), and the first-year sequence (GER 506 and 507, or 604) at Texas.
- Is the exam getting easier or harder?
- The published distributions moved in both directions between 2024 and 2025: fewer 5s, more 3-or-higher. On 4,200 students a few hundred results shift the percentages; the College Board does not publish a reason.
- Why does the sheet take percentages on the speaking tasks?
- Because the College Board has not published point scales for the new tasks. The weights are published; enter your expected share of each rubric.
