AP Art History is built on a set list of 250 works. The exam asks 80 multiple-choice questions, most of them on colour images, at 50 %, and six free-response questions at 50 %: two long essays worth 8 and 6 points and four short ones worth 5 each, for 34 points. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count and the 34-point total.
It is a small exam (25,584 students in 2025) with a flat distribution, a quarter of students at 2 and a quarter at 3, and the College Board's July 2025 post lists it among the four AP courses whose participation fell that year.
How the Art History exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice80 questions · 50 %
- Sets of 2 to 3 questions on colour images of works, plus individual questions; works from and beyond the image set. (1 hour)
- Section II, Q1: Comparisonlong essay · 8 of 34 points
- Compare a work of the student's choice with a provided work and argue the significance of the differences. (2 hours for all six)
- Section II, Q2: Visual/contextual analysislong essay · 6 of 34 points
- A work from the image set, no image provided; an art-historically defensible claim with evidence. (shared)
- Section II, Q3 to Q6: Short essays4 questions · 5 points each
- Visual analysis of a work beyond the set (image provided), contextual analysis, attribution with visual evidence, and continuity and change against a tradition. (shared)
The College Board page for May 2027 lists the six question types and the 50-50 split; the 2025 scoring statistics give the points as 8, 6, 5, 5, 5 and 5. Question 2 is the one with no image: students must recall a work from the 250-piece set well enough to analyse it unseen.
A multiple-choice answer is worth 0.63 composite, the lowest on any AP sheet, and a free-response point 1.47. The two long essays together are 14 points, a fifth of the whole exam.

What a Art History score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns ARH 2000 (3 credits, State Core H). A 4 or 5 earns ARH 2000 and ARH 2050 (6 credits), the second with H and N credit. |
| UT Austin | A 4 or 5 earns ARH 302 or ARH 303. A 3 earns ARH 301. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns ART H 100 (5 credits), arts and humanities. |
Humanities credit at every score, with a better course at 4 at Florida and Texas. The University of California's systemwide table gives Art History 5.3 semester units, the same as Biology or a language, which is more than it gives Psychology or Statistics.

How the Art History curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are the site's default estimate, applied to a distribution with 16 % at 5 and a thick 2 band. They are reconstructions; the College Board does not publish cut scores. The released scoring guidelines show the essays scored on fixed task points (identification, claim, evidence, explanation), which is why the sheet asks for a total out of 34 rather than a count of essays.
Within three composite points of a line, read the result as either score.
