The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.

All AP exams

AP English Language and Composition is the biggest AP exam by entry, and its score is mostly essays: three free-response prompts carry 55 % of the composite, the 45 multiple-choice questions the other 45 %. Each essay is scored on a 6-point analytic rubric, so the free-response box on the sheet takes a total out of 18.

The 2025 results are the first after the College Board moved AP Lang to its evidence-based standard-setting method, and the pass rate jumped from 54.6 % to 74.3 % in one year. The curve under the sheet is built around the 2025 figures, not the earlier ones.

How the AP Lang exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice45 questions · 45 %
Five sets: 23 to 25 reading questions on nonfiction passages and 20 to 22 writing questions that ask for revisions to a draft. (1 hour)
Section II: Synthesis essay1 of 3 essays · 55 % shared by the three essays
Six sources on one topic, including a visual or quantitative one; the essay must cite at least three. (2 hours 15 minutes for all three, including a 15-minute reading period)
Section II: Rhetorical analysis1 of 3 essays · shared
How a nonfiction writer's language choices serve the text's purpose. (about 40 minutes recommended)
Section II: Argument1 of 3 essays · shared
An evidence-based argument on a given topic, with evidence drawn from the student's own reading and experience. (about 40 minutes recommended)

The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the 45-55 split. The three essays are scored on the same 6-point rubric: 1 point for a defensible thesis, up to 4 for evidence and commentary, and 1 for sophistication. The sophistication point is the one most students never see; the rubric reserves it for essays whose argument or style is notably mature. Three essays at 5 of 6 is an excellent paper.

The multiple-choice section is less than half the score but it is the only part where every question is equal: each correct answer is worth exactly 1 composite point. One essay point is worth about 3.1.

Worked AP Lang examples

30/45 multiple choice, 12/18 essays
30.0 + 36.7 = 66.7, an estimated 4. A 5 at 72 is 5.3 points away, which is two more essay points (3.1 each) or six more multiple-choice answers.
38/45, 15/18
38.0 + 45.8 = 83.8, a clear 5. Three essays at 5 of 6 with strong multiple choice is a top-band paper under the 2025 standard.
22/45, 9/18
22.0 + 27.5 = 49.5, an estimated 3. Half marks on both sections passes under the 2025 curve; it would not have on the 2024 distribution, where only 54.6 % reached a 3.

How AP Lang scores were distributed

No large AP exam changed more between 2024 and 2025. The share of students at 3 or higher rose from 54.6 % to 74.3 %, the 5 share from 9.8 % to 13.4 %, and the 2 band shrank from 28.8 % to 16.1 %. The College Board's July 2025 post uses AP Lang as its worked example of evidence-based standard setting: 773 professors at 524 colleges rated the exam against their own finals, and the standard for a 5 was set at high evidence-and-reasoning points on all three essays (13 % met it) while a 3 required a thesis supported with evidence on all three (74 % met it).

That makes the 2024 column a different scale from the 2025 one. Comparing a 2025 Lang score with a 2024 one is not comparing like with like.

What a AP Lang score is worth for credit

Composition credit is the usual reward: all three universities map AP Lang to a first-year writing course from a 3. Florida adds a second course at 4. None of the three uses Lang for literature credit; that is AP Literature's territory.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the AP Lang curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5 and 58 % for a 4, are estimates and were revised against the 2025 distribution. The College Board's description of its 2025 standard is useful here: a 5 needed high evidence-and-commentary points on all three essays, which on the 6-point rubric means roughly 5 of 6 each, or 15 of 18. With a mid-30s multiple-choice score that lands at about 72 composite, which is where the estimate sits.

The real cut scores are set each year and not published. Because essays are two-thirds of a 5 under this standard, a result near a boundary depends on how a reader scored one paragraph, and should be read as either score.

Questions about the AP Lang exam

How is each AP Lang essay scored?
On 6 points: 1 for a defensible thesis, 0 to 4 for evidence and commentary, and 1 for sophistication. Three essays make 18 points, which is what the sheet asks for.
How many sources must the synthesis essay cite?
At least three of the six provided. Using more does not earn more points by itself; the evidence-and-commentary row rewards how the sources are used.
Why did AP Lang scores rise so much in 2025?
The College Board changed how it sets score standards. Its July 2025 post describes the new evidence-based method using AP Lang as the example, and 74 % of students met the standard for a 3 against 54.6 % the year before.
Is AP Lang multiple choice the same as the SAT reading section?
No. Lang has 45 questions in five sets on nonfiction passages, and 20 to 22 of them are writing questions that ask which revision improves a draft. There is no vocabulary-in-isolation question.
Does AP Lang give college credit for writing?
At the three universities on this page, yes, from a 3: ENC 1101 at Florida, RHE 306 at Texas, ENGL 106 at Washington.
How long is the exam?
3 hours 15 minutes: 1 hour of multiple choice and 2 hours 15 minutes for the three essays, including the 15-minute reading period.
