The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.

All AP exams

AP World History: Modern covers 1200 to the present and uses the same exam shell as APUSH and Euro: 55 multiple-choice questions, three short answers, a document-based question and a long essay. The sheet weights them 40, 20, 25 and 15 % and circles the estimated score.

World is the second-largest AP history exam (411,547 students in 2025) and the hardest of the three to pass. Only 64.3 % scored a 3 or higher, and the 2 band was the second most common score, which is unusual among large AP exams.

How the AP World exam is built

Section I, Part A: Multiple choice55 questions · 40 %
Sets of 3 to 4 questions on texts, images, graphs and maps. (55 minutes)
Section I, Part B: Short answer3 questions · 20 %
Required. A secondary text, a primary text and a non-text source, each from a different period between 1200 and 2001. (40 minutes)
Section II: Document-based question1 question · 25 %
Seven documents on a development between 1200 and 2001. (60 minutes recommended, including a 15-minute reading period)
Section II: Long essay1 question · 15 %
A broad prompt that lets students choose among several developments. (40 minutes recommended)

The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the 40-20-25-15 weighting. The distinctive thing about World is breadth: every short answer and the DBQ can reach back to 1200, so eight centuries and every region are in play, where APUSH's DBQ covers 226 years of one country.

As on the other histories, the three short answers are scored out of 3 each (9 total), the DBQ out of 7 and the long essay out of 6. Section II is one block of 1 hour 40 minutes with the reading period inside it.

Worked AP World examples

30/55, 5/9, 4/7, 3/6
21.8 + 11.1 + 14.3 + 7.5 = 54.7. That is a 3, and 0.3 points short of the estimated 4 at 55. One more correct multiple-choice answer (0.7 composite) would cross the line.
45/55, 7/9, 5/7, 4/6
32.7 + 15.6 + 17.9 + 10.0 = 76.1, a clear 5 with 8 points to spare. A strong multiple-choice section is worth more here than on any other part: 55 questions carry 40 %.
The hollow middle: 25/55, 4/9, 3/7, 3/6
18.2 + 8.9 + 10.7 + 7.5 = 45.3, a low 3. Many World students land between 38 and 46 composite, which is why the 2 and 3 bands are so close in size.

How AP World scores were distributed

The World distribution has a hollow middle. In 2025, 33.4 % of students scored a 4 but only 17.0 % scored a 3, and 26.5 % scored a 2. The same dip appeared in 2024 (19.6 % at 3, 27.4 % at 2). No other AP history exam shows it; APUSH had 23.3 % at 3 and 18.4 % at 2 the same year.

The share of 5s rose from 11.9 % to 13.9 % between 2024 and 2025, and the mean climbed from 3.11 to 3.16. The entry grew by 32,000 students in one year.

What a AP World score is worth for credit

World is the AP history where a higher score buys the least: none of the three universities here gives more for a 5 than for a 3. Florida's credit is general rather than course-specific at every score, unlike its APUSH and Euro policies, where a 4 unlocks named courses.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the AP World curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet (68, 55, 42 and 30 %) match the Euro estimates, because the two exams use the same question types and reader rubrics. The published distribution is what makes World feel harder: with only 64.3 % at 3 or above, a composite near 42 % is more common than on the other histories, and a point either side of it decides the score for a lot of students.

The College Board sets the real cut scores after each exam and does not publish them. These are reconstructions and should be read as a band of about three composite points on either side of each line.

Questions about the AP World exam

Why do so many World History students get a 2?
The published distributions for 2024 and 2025 both show more 2s than 3s (27.4 % and 26.5 % at 2). The exam covers eight centuries and every region, and World is often a student's first AP exam. The College Board does not publish a reason.
What period does the World History DBQ cover?
Anything from 1200 to 2001. The APUSH DBQ is limited to 1754 to 1980; the World DBQ is not limited to a sub-period.
How are the short-answer questions scored?
Out of 3 points each, one per part. The sheet asks for the total out of 9. All three must be answered; there is no choice among prompts.
Is a 3 on AP World History worth anything?
At the three universities on this page it earns the same credit as a 5: a general-credit course at Florida, HIS 301J at Texas, HSTRY 100 at Washington.
Is there a guessing penalty?
No. Score is the count of correct multiple-choice answers plus rubric points, so answer everything.
