AP African American Studies has the most elaborate scoring of any AP social science: 60 multiple-choice questions at 60 %, an exam-day validation question at 1.5 %, three short-answer questions at 18 %, a document-based question at 12 % and an individual student project scored by the teacher at 8.5 %. The sheet has a box for each, with the point maximums from the 2025 scoring statistics.
The course went national in 2023-24. Its entry doubled to 21,435 in 2025, and 79.2 % of students scored 3 or higher, with the 4 as the most common score.
How the AAAS exam is built
- Section IA: Multiple choice60 questions · 60 %
- Sets of 3 to 4 questions, each with one or two sources; about half the sources are from the course's required list. (70 minutes)
- Section IB: Exam-day validation question1 question · 1.5 % (2 points)
- A written response to one of the project's oral-defence questions about a source the student used. (10 minutes)
- Section II: Short-answer questions3 questions · 18 % (4 + 3 + 3 points)
- One on a text source, one on a visual source, one on a broad thematic concept, each with three or four parts. (40 minutes)
- Section II: Document-based question1 question · 12 % (7 points)
- Five documents; a thesis, context, evidence from at least three sources plus one beyond them, sourcing on two, and citation. (45 minutes)
- Individual student project3-week project with presentation and oral defence · 8.5 % (12 points)
- Teacher scored on an AP rubric; submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio. (during the course)
The College Board page for May 2027 lists the five parts and their weights, and the 2025 scoring statistics give the point maximums: validation 2, short answers 4, 3 and 3, DBQ 7, project 12. The weights do not follow the points: the 12-point project is worth 8.5 % while the 7-point DBQ is worth 12 %, so a DBQ point (1.71 composite) is worth more than twice a project point (0.71).
The DBQ differs from the history exams' version: five documents rather than seven, 45 minutes rather than 60, and an explicit citation requirement.

Worked AAAS examples
- 45/60, 1/2, 7/10, 5/7, 10/12
- 45.0 + 0.8 + 12.6 + 8.6 + 7.1 = 74.0, an estimated 5 with 2 points of margin. Three quarters of the multiple choice with solid written sections.
- 36/60, 1/2, 5/10, 3/7, 8/12
- 36.0 + 0.8 + 9.0 + 5.1 + 5.7 = 56.6, an estimated 3, 1.4 points short of a 4 at 58. One more DBQ point (1.7) would cross.
How AAAS scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 17.3% | 14.2% |
| 4 | 32.5% | 30.2% |
| 3 | 29.3% | 28.2% |
| 2 | 15.9% | 18.6% |
| 1 | 4.9% | 8.8% |
| 3 or higher | 79.2% | 72.6% |
| Mean score | 3.41 | 3.22 |
| Students | 21,435 | 10,741 |
In its second national year the exam doubled its entry (10,741 to 21,435) and improved at every band: 5s up from 14.2 % to 17.3 %, 1s down from 8.8 % to 4.9 %, 3-or-higher from 72.6 % to 79.2 %. The College Board's July 2025 table lists it at 73 % and 79 %.
A 79.2 % pass rate with a 4 as the modal score is unusual among the social sciences; it is closer to the Capstone courses than to Psychology or Human Geography. Part of the score (the project) is teacher assessed, which no other social science shares.

What a AAAS score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of California | 2.6 semester units (4 quarter units) for a score of 3 or higher, listed as available after May 2025. |
| UT Austin | Not listed on UT Austin's credit-by-exam table; no course credit. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns AFRAM 102 (5 credits), social science and diversity credit. |
Credit policies are still catching up with a young exam. Washington has a named course and the University of California added units from May 2025; Texas has not listed it, and the University of Florida's exam credit chart does not include it as of the date read. Check the college's own page; policies for this exam are changing year to year.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.
How the AAAS curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are the site's standard estimate and are provisional: the exam has two years of national results, one of its components is teacher scored, and the composite is built from five parts with unequal point-to-weight ratios. They are reconstructions from the 2025 distribution and the released scoring guidelines, not published cut scores.
Enter the project as its 12-point rubric score. Within four points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the AAAS exam
- What is the exam-day validation question?
- A 10-minute written response to one of the oral-defence questions from the student's own project, about a source they used. It is worth 1.5 % of the score and 2 points, per the College Board page and the 2025 scoring statistics.
- Who scores the individual student project?
- The teacher, using a College Board rubric, with the score submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio. It is worth 8.5 % of the exam score and 12 points.
- How is the DBQ different from the APUSH DBQ?
- Five documents instead of seven, 45 minutes instead of 60, 7 points, and the rubric requires citing the sources used (by letter, title or author).
- Does the exam earn college credit?
- At Washington, AFRAM 102 for a 3 or higher. The University of California gives 2.6 semester units from May 2025. UT Austin and the University of Florida do not list it on their tables as of the date read.
- How many students take it?
- 21,435 in 2025, up from 10,741 in 2024, per the College Board's distribution PDFs.
