All AP exams

AP Human Geography is split evenly between 60 multiple-choice questions and three free-response questions, each scored out of 7 points. The free-response questions are graded on 21 points in total, so each point is worth 2.38 composite, nearly three times a multiple-choice answer. The sheet takes the two totals.

Human Geography is often a student's first AP exam, and until 2025 it had one of the worst bottom bands of any: 29.5 % of students scored a 1 in 2024. In 2025 that fell to 9.9 %, and 64.7 % scored 3 or higher.

How the AP HuG exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice60 questions · 50 %
Individual and set-based questions; 30 to 40 % reference maps, tables, charts, images or landscapes, split evenly between quantitative and qualitative sources. (1 hour)
Section II, Q1: No stimulus1 question · 7 of 21 points
A geographic scenario answered from course concepts alone. (1 hour 15 minutes for all three)
Section II, Q2: One stimulus1 question · 7 of 21 points
A scenario with one data set, image or map. (shared)
Section II, Q3: Two stimuli1 question · 7 of 21 points
A scenario with two data sets, images or maps; at least one question each year requires analysis across geographic scales. (shared)

The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the 60-and-3 format with its 50-50 split and specifies the stimulus pattern (none, one, two). The 2025 scoring statistics confirm 7 points per question; the 2025 means were 3.57, 4.44 and 2.97 of 7, so the two-stimulus question was the hardest that year.

Each free-response question has seven lettered parts worth one point each, and the parts are scored independently. That makes partial credit the norm and is why the sheet asks for a total out of 21 rather than a count of questions.

Worked AP HuG examples

42/60 multiple choice, 14/21 free response
35.0 + 33.3 = 68.3, an estimated 4, 1.7 points short of a 5 at 70. One more free-response part would cross.
48/60, 16/21
40.0 + 38.1 = 78.1, a clear 5.
30/60, 9/21
25.0 + 21.4 = 46.4, an estimated 3 with 4.4 points of margin. Half marks on the multiple choice and three parts per free-response question passes on the 2025 curve.

How AP HuG scores were distributed

No band of any AP exam changed more between 2024 and 2025 than Human Geography's 1 band: 29.5 % to 9.9 %. Those students moved mostly into the 2 (14.3 % to 25.4 %), with the 3 and 4 bands also growing; the 5 share actually fell slightly, from 17.9 % to 17.0 %. The College Board's July 2025 post, which explains its evidence-based standard setting, lists Human Geography at 56 % and 65 %.

The result is a distribution with a thick 2 band (25.4 %, larger than the 3 band) and a pass rate still below two thirds. Human Geography is the largest AP exam with that shape apart from World History.

What a AP HuG score is worth for credit

Flat credit everywhere: one introductory geography course for any passing score, nothing more for a 5. It is a useful general-education or elective credit rather than a prerequisite for anything.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the AP HuG curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 70 % for a 5, 56 % for a 4, 42 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are estimates set against the 2025 distribution; against the 2024 distribution the 2 line would have sat much higher. They are reconstructions from released exams and the published results. The College Board does not publish cut scores.

The free-response section is small (21 points) and heavy (half the score), so one lettered part is worth 2.38 composite. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.

Questions about the AP HuG exam

How are the Human Geography free-response questions scored?
Each out of 7, one point per lettered part, scored independently; 21 points in total. The 2025 scoring statistics confirm the 7-point maximum on all three.
Why did so many students score a 1 before 2025?
The published distributions show 29.5 % at 1 in 2024 and 9.9 % in 2025. The College Board reset the exam's standard in 2025 using its evidence-based method; it has not published a reason for the earlier rate.
What is the stimulus pattern on the free response?
Question 1 has no stimulus, question 2 one (data, image or map), question 3 two, per the College Board page. At least one question requires analysis across geographic scales.
Is AP Human Geography a good first AP?
It is often taken in ninth grade. Its 2025 pass rate (64.7 %) is below the all-subject average (71.5 %), and 35 % of students scored a 1 or 2, so it is not an easy exam despite its reputation.
What credit does a 5 earn?
The same course as a 3 at Florida, Texas and Washington. No tier for a higher score.
