The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.
APUSH is the largest AP history exam, with 516,738 students in May 2025, and it has the most moving parts of any sheet on this site: 55 multiple-choice questions, three short-answer questions, a document-based question and a long essay, each weighted separately. Write the four raw scores in the boxes and the sheet converts each to its share of the composite.
The multiple-choice section is 40 % of the score, so a strong essay day cannot carry a weak morning on its own. The reverse is also true: the DBQ is scored on 7 points and is worth 25 %, which makes every DBQ point worth about 3.6 composite points, more than any single multiple-choice question.
How the APUSH exam is built
- Section I, Part A: Multiple choice55 questions · 40 %
- Sets of 3 to 4 questions on primary and secondary sources, images, graphs and maps. (55 minutes)
- Section I, Part B: Short answer3 questions · 20 %
- All three are required. Question 1 uses secondary texts, question 2 a primary text, question 3 a non-text source; together they span 1491 to 2001. (40 minutes)
- Section II: Document-based question1 question · 25 %
- Seven documents on a development from 1754 to 1980; an argument supported by the documents and outside evidence. (60 minutes recommended, including a 15-minute reading period)
- Section II: Long essay1 question · 15 %
- A broad prompt drawing on about half of the course's periods; students choose which development to argue about. (40 minutes recommended)
The 40-20-25-15 split has been stable for years and the College Board page for the May 2027 exam repeats it unchanged. What people miss is the time budget: Section II is one block of 1 hour 40 minutes, and the 60 and 40 minute figures are recommendations, not enforced limits. Students who spend 70 minutes on the DBQ have 30 for the long essay.
The short-answer questions are each scored out of 3 points, the DBQ out of 7 and the long essay out of 6, which is why the sheet shows 9, 7 and 6 as the maximums. The DBQ's date range (1754 to 1980) is narrower than the short answers' (1491 to 2001), so the earliest and latest periods can only appear elsewhere on the exam.

Worked APUSH examples
- 40/55, 6/9, 5/7, 4/6
- Multiple choice 29.1 + short answer 13.3 + DBQ 17.9 + long essay 10.0 = 70.3. That clears the estimated cutoff for a 5 by 0.3 points, so on a harsher year it is a high 4.
- 35/55, 5/9, 4/7, 3/6
- 25.5 + 11.1 + 14.3 + 7.5 = 58.4, an estimated 4 with 2.4 points of margin. One more DBQ point (3.6 composite) would move it to 62; a 5 would need about 12 more.
- A strong essay day: 30/55, 7/9, 6/7, 5/6
- 21.8 + 15.6 + 21.4 + 12.5 = 71.3. Weak multiple choice can still produce a 5 if the written sections are near the top, because they are 60 % of the composite between them.
How APUSH scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 14.2% | 12.8% |
| 4 | 36.2% | 33.3% |
| 3 | 23.3% | 26.0% |
| 2 | 18.4% | 19.4% |
| 1 | 8.0% | 8.4% |
| 3 or higher | 73.7% | 72.2% |
| Mean score | 3.30 | 3.23 |
| Students | 516,738 | 488,688 |
The most common APUSH score is a 4, not a 3. In 2025 more than a third of students (36.2 %) earned a 4, while only 14.2 % earned a 5, so the exam separates the top band more sharply than the middle one. Scores of 3 or higher went to 73.7 % of students, up from 72.2 % in 2024, and the share of 5s rose by 1.4 points in one year.
Set beside AP World History: Modern, which uses the same question types and weights, APUSH students earn a 3 or higher about nine points more often. That gap is in the 2 band: 18.4 % of APUSH students scored a 2 against 26.5 % in World.

What a APUSH score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns AMH L0001 (3 credits, no UF course equivalent, no general-education credit). A 4 or 5 earns AMH 2010 and AMH 2020 (6 credits), which satisfy State Core S and the civic literacy requirement. |
| UT Austin | A 3, 4 or 5 earns HIS 315L. The same course for every passing score. |
| University of Washington | A 3 earns HSTAA 100 (5 credits). A 4 or 5 earns HSTAA 101 (5 credits) instead. Both count as social science credit. |
Florida is the clearest case of why a 4 can matter: a 3 gives general credit that does not map to a course, while a 4 unlocks the full two-semester survey. Texas treats every passing score alike. Washington changes the course but not the number of credits.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.
How the APUSH curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet (70 % for a 5, 56 % for a 4, 42 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2) are our estimate; the College Board does not publish them. They were set so that the composite bands roughly reproduce the shape of the published distribution: a thin top band, a wide 4 band and a 3 band that starts well under half marks.
Two things keep this honest. First, the real cut scores are set after each administration by equating against earlier forms, so they move by a few composite points from year to year. Second, the APUSH essays are scored by readers on rubrics, and the composite the College Board computes weights those rubric points exactly as the sheet does. A result within about three composite points of a boundary should be read as either score.
Questions about the APUSH exam
- How is the APUSH DBQ scored?
- On 7 points: 1 for a thesis, 1 for contextualization, up to 2 for using the documents as evidence, 1 for evidence beyond the documents, 1 for sourcing at least two documents, and 1 for complexity. The sheet asks for that 0 to 7 score.
- Is there a penalty for guessing on the multiple choice?
- No. Points are earned for correct answers only, so a blank is never better than a guess.
- How long is the APUSH exam?
- 3 hours 15 minutes of testing: 55 minutes of multiple choice, 40 minutes of short answer, then 1 hour 40 minutes for the DBQ and long essay together. The College Board exam page lists May 7, 2027 for the next sitting.
- Do I need to answer the DBQ and long essay in order?
- No. Section II is one timed block. Most students write the DBQ first because its reading period comes first, but the 60 and 40 minute figures are recommendations.
- What score do colleges want for APUSH credit?
- It depends on the college. Of the three policies on this page, Texas gives course credit for a 3, Florida's full survey credit starts at a 4, and Washington gives credit at a 3 but a different course at a 4. Check the college's own page.
- Why is the APUSH 5 rate lower than Calculus BC's?
- Different exams, different populations and different cut scores. In 2025, 14.2 % of APUSH students earned a 5 against 44.0 % on Calculus BC. The APUSH distribution is centred on the 4.
