The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Format since May 2025: 75 multiple-choice questions and two 7-point free-response questions.
AP Psychology was rebuilt for May 2025: 75 multiple-choice questions at two thirds of the score and two free-response questions, an Article Analysis Question and an Evidence-Based Question, each scored out of 7, at one third. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count and the free-response total out of 14.
It is the sixth-largest AP exam (334,038 students in 2025), and its distribution changed as much as its format: the share of 1s fell from 26.5 % to 9.8 % and the 3-or-higher rate rose from 61.7 % to 70.5 %.
How the AP Psych exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice75 questions · 66.7 %
- Define and explain content across the course; apply concept application, data analysis and scientific investigation skills. (90 minutes)
- Section II, Q1: Article Analysis Question1 question, 6 parts · 7 of 14 points
- One summarised peer-reviewed study: research method, a variable, a statistic, an ethical guideline, generalisability, and an argument applying course content. (70 minutes for both questions)
- Section II, Q2: Evidence-Based Question1 question, 3 parts · 7 of 14 points
- Three summarised sources on a topic: a claim, two pieces of evidence from the sources, and reasoning that ties them to psychology content. (shared)
The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the format introduced in 2025. The weights are deliberately uneven: 66.7 % for multiple choice, 33.3 % for free response, so a multiple-choice answer is 0.89 composite and a free-response point 2.38, one of the largest per-point values on any AP sheet.
The two free-response questions are not essays in the old sense. The AAQ is six short parts about one study, and the EBQ is a claim-evidence-reasoning structure across three sources. Both are scored on 7 fixed rubric points.

Worked AP Psych examples
- 55/75 multiple choice, 10/14 free response
- 48.9 + 23.8 = 72.7, an estimated 4, 2.3 points short of a 5 at 75. One more free-response point (2.38) would cross; it would take three more multiple-choice answers.
- 60/75, 12/14
- 53.3 + 28.6 = 81.9, a clear 5.
- 40/75, 7/14
- 35.6 + 16.7 = 52.2, an estimated 3 with 4.2 points of margin. Just over half marks on both sections passes.
How AP Psych scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 14.4% | 19.2% |
| 4 | 30.9% | 23.1% |
| 3 | 25.2% | 19.5% |
| 2 | 19.7% | 11.8% |
| 1 | 9.8% | 26.5% |
| 3 or higher | 70.5% | 61.7% |
| Mean score | 3.20 | 2.97 |
| Students | 334,038 | 320,164 |
The 2024 and 2025 columns describe two different exams and two different standards. In 2024, on the old 100-question, two-essay format, the 1 was the most common score at 26.5 %. In 2025, on the new format, the 1 band was 9.8 % and the 4 became the most common score at 30.9 %. The 5 share fell, from 19.2 % to 14.4 %, so the new distribution is narrower at both ends. The College Board's July 2025 table lists Psychology's 3-or-higher rate as 62 % and 72 %.
Comparing a 2025 Psychology score with a 2024 one is not comparing like with like, and neither is comparing a practice test from before 2025 with the sheet.

What a AP Psych score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | Any passing score earns PSY 2012 (3 credits), with State Core S. |
| UT Austin | A 3, 4 or 5 earns PSY 301, the introductory course. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns PSYCH 101 (5 credits), social science. |
Psychology credit is flat and uniform: one introductory course for any passing score, at all three universities, with nothing extra for a 5. It is among the simplest AP credit policies anywhere.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.
How the AP Psych curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 75 % for a 5, 62 % for a 4, 48 % for a 3 and 35 % for a 2, are the strictest on the site at the top, because the 2025 distribution puts only 14.4 % of students in the 5 band on an exam that is two thirds multiple choice. They are estimates reconstructed from the 2025 results and the released scoring guidelines for the two 7-point questions. The College Board does not publish cut scores and has only one year of results on this format.
One free-response point moves the composite 2.38, so a single rubric row on the AAQ can decide a boundary. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the AP Psych exam
- What are the AAQ and the EBQ?
- The two free-response questions on the exam since 2025. The Article Analysis Question gives one summarised study and asks six short parts about its method, variables, statistics, ethics, generalisability and application. The Evidence-Based Question gives three sources and asks for a claim, two pieces of evidence and reasoning. Each is scored out of 7.
- Why did the Psychology 1 rate fall so much in 2025?
- The exam changed format in 2025 and the College Board reset its score standard with its evidence-based method the same year. The published distribution shows 9.8 % at 1 in 2025 against 26.5 % in 2024.
- How much is the multiple choice worth?
- Two thirds of the score, from 75 questions in 90 minutes. The two free-response questions share the remaining third.
- Can I use an old practice exam with this sheet?
- Not for the free response. Pre-2025 exams had two essays scored on 7 points but with different tasks and 100 multiple-choice questions. Scale a pre-2025 multiple-choice score to 75 if you must; treat the free response separately.
- Is a 3 on AP Psychology worth credit?
- At Florida, Texas and Washington, yes, and a 5 earns exactly the same course.
