The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.

All AP exams

AP Comparative Government and Politics studies six countries (China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia and the United Kingdom) and examines them with 55 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions worth 4, 5, 5 and 5 points, each section half the score. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count and the 19-point total.

It is one of the smallest AP social sciences, with 27,150 students in 2025, and has a stable, 3-centred distribution: 32.2 % scored a 3 and 71.8 % scored 3 or higher.

How the Comp Gov exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice55 questions · 50 %
40 to 44 individual questions plus three sets on quantitative stimuli and two on text sources. (1 hour)
Section II, Q1: Concept application1 question · 4 of 19 points
Define or describe a concept and explain or compare across political systems. (1 hour 30 minutes for all four)
Section II, Q2: Quantitative analysis1 question · 5 of 19 points
Identify a trend in data and relate it to a political system or process. (shared)
Section II, Q3: Comparative analysis1 question · 5 of 19 points
Compare concepts, institutions or policies across course countries. (shared)
Section II, Q4: Argument essay1 question · 5 of 19 points
An argument supported with evidence from the course countries. (shared)

The College Board page for May 2027 lists the four question types and the 50-50 split; the 2025 scoring statistics give the points as 4, 5, 5 and 5. That is two more free-response points than AP US Government's 17, and the argument essay is worth 5 here rather than 6.

A multiple-choice answer is 0.91 composite and a free-response point 2.63. The six-country frame means every free-response question can ask about any of them, and the comparative question requires at least two.

Worked Comp Gov examples

40/55 multiple choice, 13/19 free response
36.4 + 34.2 = 70.6, an estimated 4. A 5 at 78 is 7.4 points away: three free-response points would cross, or eight multiple-choice answers.
45/55, 16/19
40.9 + 42.1 = 83.0, a clear 5.
30/55, 9/19
27.3 + 23.7 = 51.0, an estimated 3 by 1.0 point, which is where the exam's large 3 band begins.

How Comp Gov scores were distributed

Comparative Government is a 3-centred exam: 32.2 % of students scored a 3 in 2025 and 32.1 % in 2024, with the other bands almost unchanged between the two years. The 3-or-higher rate dipped from 73.0 % to 71.8 %; the College Board's July 2025 table lists it at 73 % and 72 %.

Set beside US Government, which shares the exam design, Comparative has far fewer 5s (16.3 % against 23.7 %) and a fatter 3 band (32.2 % against 23.2 %).

What a Comp Gov score is worth for credit

Comparative Government credit is flat where it exists and absent at Texas, which lists US Government (with its Texas supplement) but not Comparative. The University of California's systemwide table gives 2.6 semester units for it. For most students the exam's value is the second AP in a government pairing rather than a specific course.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the Comp Gov curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 78 % for a 5, 65 % for a 4, 50 % for a 3 and 35 % for a 2, are the strictest on the site, and the least certain. They were set to reproduce a distribution where a third of students sit in the 3 band and only one in six reaches a 5, on a 19-point free-response scale where the 2025 means were about half of each question's points. They are reconstructions; the College Board does not publish cut scores, and on an exam this small the real boundaries can move several points between years.

A free-response point is worth 2.63 composite. Within four points of a line, read the result as either score.

Questions about the Comp Gov exam

Which countries are on the AP Comparative Government exam?
China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia and the United Kingdom, per the College Board page. Every free-response question may draw on any of them.
How many free-response points are there?
19: concept application 4, quantitative analysis 5, comparative analysis 5, argument essay 5, per the 2025 scoring statistics.
Does Comparative Government earn credit at UT Austin?
No. It does not appear on UT Austin's credit-by-exam table. Florida and Washington give one course for any passing score.
Why are the estimated cutoffs higher than for US Government?
Because the published distribution is lower: 16.3 % at 5 against 23.7 %, with a third of students at 3. The same composite has to map to a lower score to reproduce that. Both sets of cutoffs are estimates.
Can I take US and Comparative Government in the same year?
Yes; they are separate exams on separate days with separate scores, and some schools teach them as a two-semester pair.
