The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.

All AP exams

AP Macroeconomics weights its 60 multiple-choice questions at 66 % and its three free-response questions at 33 %, with the long question worth half the free-response section on its own. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count and the free-response total out of 20 (10 for the long question, 5 for each short one).

Macro is the larger of the two AP economics exams (176,356 students in 2025 against 117,548 for Micro) and the slightly harder one to score well on: 20.4 % earned a 5 against Micro's 21.6 %.

How the AP Macro exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice60 questions · 66 %
Content and reasoning across the course's skill categories. (1 hour 10 minutes)
Section II: Long free response1 question · 50 % of the 33 % section (10 points)
Assertions, explanations, numerical analysis and graphs on a connected macro scenario. (1 hour for all three, including a 10-minute reading period)
Section II: Short free response2 questions · 25 % of the section each (5 points each)
Shorter scenarios, each with the same mix of tasks. (shared)

The College Board page for May 2027 gives the weights as 66 % and 33 % and splits the free-response section 50-25-25 by question. The 2025 scoring statistics put the long question at 10 points and the short ones at 5, so points and weights line up and the sheet can take a plain total out of 20.

A multiple-choice answer is worth 1.1 composite and a free-response point 1.67. Graphs are expected in the free response: correctly labelled axes and curves earn points on their own.

Worked AP Macro examples

45/60 multiple choice, 14/20 free response
50.0 + 23.3 = 73.3, an estimated 5 by 1.3 points.
36/60, 10/20
40.0 + 16.7 = 56.7, an estimated 3, 1.3 points short of a 4 at 58. One free-response point (1.67) would cross; so would two multiple-choice answers.
A perfect free response: 31/60, 20/20
34.5 + 33.3 = 67.8, an estimated 4. Even full marks on the free response cannot make a 5 out of half marks on the multiple choice.

How AP Macro scores were distributed

Macro's distribution is close to flat across the top four bands: in 2025, 20.4 % at 5, 22.9 % at 4, 24.0 % at 3 and 21.4 % at 2. The 1 band shrank from 14.1 % to 11.3 % between 2024 and 2025 and the 3-or-higher rate rose from 65.1 % to 67.3 %. The College Board's July 2025 table lists Macro at 65 % and 67 %.

Micro, taken by fewer students, had a marginally better 2025: 68.2 % at 3 or higher and 21.6 % at 5.

What a AP Macro score is worth for credit

The economics exams are where a 4 earns the real course: Texas and Washington both give an introductory survey for a 3 and the principles course only from a 4. Florida gives its four-credit principles course for any passing score.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the AP Macro curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 32 % for a 2, are estimates reconstructed from the published distribution and the released scoring guidelines, where the long question is scored out of 10 on fixed parts. With about a fifth of students in each of four bands, the lines are evenly spaced. The College Board does not publish the real cut scores.

Because two thirds of the composite is multiple choice, the free response rarely rescues a weak multiple-choice section: 20 free-response points are 33 composite in total. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.

Questions about the AP Macro exam

How are the Macro free-response points split?
10 for the long question and 5 for each short question, per the 2025 scoring statistics, matching the College Board's 50-25-25 weighting of the section.
Why is the multiple choice worth two thirds?
That is the published weighting: 66 % for 60 questions, 33 % for three free-response questions. Both AP economics exams use it.
Do I need a calculator?
The College Board exam page says calculators are permitted for this exam. The numerical work is percentages, multipliers and simple ratios.
Does a 3 earn the principles course?
At Florida, yes (ECO 2013). At Texas and Washington a 3 earns an introductory survey and the principles course needs a 4.
Should I take Macro or Micro first?
They are separate courses and exams with separate credit. In 2025 Micro had a slightly higher pass rate (68.2 % against 67.3 %); the College Board does not recommend an order.
