Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Enter each component as a percentage of its maximum.

All AP exams

AP Research has no end-of-course exam. The score comes entirely from a year-long project: an academic paper of 4,000 to 5,000 words, scored by College Board readers at 75 %, and a presentation with an oral defense in front of a three-person panel, scored by the teacher at 25 %. The sheet takes each as a percentage of its rubric.

It is the second half of the AP Capstone pair and, on the published numbers, one of the two easiest AP scores to pass: 88.5 % of the 43,214 students in 2025 scored 3 or higher, second only to AP Chinese Language.

How the Research exam is built

Academic paper4,000 to 5,000 words · 75 %
An original research question, method, analysis and conclusion. College Board scored. (through the course; final submission 30 April 2027)
Presentation and oral defense15 to 20 minutes including 3 to 4 questions from a panel of 3 evaluators · 25 %
Teacher scored; teachers submit presentation scores by the May deadline. (during the course)

The College Board assessment page describes a single through-course performance task worth 100 % of the score, split 75-25 between the paper and the defense. There is no May sitting; the dates on the page are the 30 April task deadline and the 10 May deadline for teachers to submit presentation scores and checkpoint affirmations.

That makes Research the only AP score on this site with no College Board scored timed component at all. Three quarters of it is one document.

Worked Research examples

Paper 60 %, defense 80 %
45.0 + 20.0 = 65.0, an estimated 5 on the line. A strong defense cannot carry a middling paper far: the same defense with a 50 % paper gives 57.5 and drops to a 4.
Paper 45 %, defense 60 %
33.8 + 15.0 = 48.8, an estimated 3. Most Research students land in this band; it held 45.6 % of them in 2025.

How Research scores were distributed

Research has the second-highest 3-or-higher rate of any AP after Chinese Language (89.2 %): 88.5 % in 2025 against 86.1 % in 2024, with only 2.2 % scoring a 1. The 3 is the most common score (45.6 %), as it is in Seminar, but the top is wider: 14.8 % earned a 5 against Seminar's 9.4 %, and the mean score is 3.44 against 3.17.

Entries grew by 22 % in a year, from 35,469 to 43,214, following the growth in Seminar the year before.

What a Research score is worth for credit

As with Seminar, the credit is general and flat: no university here distinguishes a 5 from a 3, and Texas awards nothing. The score's weight is in the AP Capstone Diploma and in what the paper itself shows an admissions reader.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the Research curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs (65, 52, 40 and 28 %) are a rough reconstruction and should be treated as such. The paper is scored on a College Board rubric and the defense on a teacher rubric, both scaled before the 75-25 weighting, and no released materials show the scaled scale. The bands were set so that about 45 % of the composite range falls in the 3 and a top band holds roughly one student in seven, which is the shape of the 2025 distribution.

Enter the paper and the defense as percentages of their rubric points. The sheet is best used for seeing how much the paper dominates: 10 percentage points on the paper move the composite 7.5; the same on the defense move it 2.5.

Questions about the Research exam

Is there an AP Research exam in May?
No. The score is the paper (75 %) and the presentation with oral defense (25 %), both completed during the course. The College Board page lists a 30 April submission deadline and a 10 May deadline for teachers' presentation scores.
Who scores the paper?
College Board readers, against a published rubric. The presentation and oral defense are scored by the teacher after a panel of three evaluators asks 3 to 4 questions.
How long must the paper be?
4,000 to 5,000 words, per the College Board assessment page.
Do I need AP Seminar first?
AP Seminar is the prerequisite course for AP Research in the Capstone sequence; both are needed, with four other AP exams, for the AP Capstone Diploma.
Why is the Research pass rate so high?
The published distribution shows 88.5 % at 3 or higher in 2025. Students self-select into a second year of Capstone after Seminar, and the work is a supervised year-long paper rather than a timed exam. The College Board does not publish a reason.
