The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Revised for 2026-27: 42 multiple-choice questions and four 10-point free-response questions replace the 40-question and six-question format.
AP Statistics has been revised for the 2026-27 school year. The May 2027 exam has 42 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions worth 10 points each, both sections 90 minutes and 50 % of the score. The older six-question free-response section with its investigative task is gone, and the sheet uses the new 40-point total.
Statistics has the widest bottom band of any AP exam: 23.7 % of the 266,791 students in 2025 scored a 1, more than scored a 2 (15.9 %). The 2026-27 revision does not change the May 2025 or 2026 results, which were set on the old exam.
How the AP Stats exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice42 questions · 50 %
- Individual questions and sets on a shared prompt; a graphing calculator with statistics functions is expected. (1 hour 30 minutes)
- Section II, Q1: Multi-focus on practices 1 and 21 question · 12.5 % (10 points)
- Formulating questions and collecting data. (1 hour 30 minutes for all four)
- Section II, Q2: Multi-focus on practices 3 and 41 question · 12.5 % (10 points)
- Analysing data and interpreting results. (shared)
- Section II, Q3: Inference1 question · 12.5 % (10 points)
- A hypothesis test or a confidence interval, with conditions checked and the conclusion in context. (shared)
- Section II, Q4: Multi-focus on practices 2, 3 and 41 question · 12.5 % (10 points)
- Collecting, analysing and interpreting in one problem. (shared)
The College Board exam page and the 2026-27 course and exam description agree: 42 multiple-choice questions, four free-response questions of 10 points each, every free-response question worth 12.5 % of the exam, graphing calculator expected throughout, formulas and tables provided. The course was reorganised into five units (one-variable data and collecting data; probability and distributions; inference for proportions; inference for means; regression).
This replaces the 40-question, six-question format in use through May 2026, where the free-response questions were scored on a 0 to 4 holistic scale and the investigative task counted double. Released exams from before 2027 will not match the sheet's point structure.

Worked AP Stats examples
- 30/42 multiple choice, 28/40 free response
- 35.7 + 35.0 = 70.7, an estimated 4, 1.3 points short of a 5 at 72. One more correct multiple-choice answer (1.19) and one free-response point (1.25) would cross.
- 20/42, 16/40
- 23.8 + 20.0 = 43.8, an estimated 2 by 0.2 points. Just under half marks on both sections sits exactly on the 3 line, which is where the large 1 and 2 bands come from.
- Inference carried: 24/42, 10 + 6 + 10 + 6 on the free response
- 28.6 on the multiple choice and 32 of 40 free-response points (40.0) give 68.6, a 4. Full marks on the two single-topic questions compensate for half marks on the multi-focus ones.
How AP Stats scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 17.0% | 17.5% |
| 4 | 21.4% | 21.8% |
| 3 | 21.9% | 22.5% |
| 2 | 15.9% | 15.9% |
| 1 | 23.7% | 22.3% |
| 3 or higher | 60.3% | 61.8% |
| Mean score | 2.92 | 2.96 |
| Students | 266,791 | 252,914 |
Statistics is a bimodal exam. In 2025 the 1 band (23.7 %) was the largest single score and the 3-or-higher rate, 60.3 %, was among the lowest of the large AP exams, yet 17.0 % earned a 5. The distribution barely moved from 2024, when 22.3 % scored a 1 and 61.8 % passed; the College Board's July 2025 table lists Statistics at 62 % and 60 %.
The mean score, 2.92, is below 3, which only a handful of AP exams share: Computer Science Principles (2.87), Latin (2.84) and the standard groups of the language exams.

What a AP Stats score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | Any passing score earns STA 2023 (3 credits), with State Core M. |
| UT Austin | A 3, 4 or 5 earns EDP 308, SDS 301 or STA 309, chosen with an advisor. The page notes STA 309 does not fulfil the core mathematics requirement. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns STAT 290 (5 credits), natural science and reasoning credit. |
Statistics credit is flat: one introductory statistics course for any passing score at all three universities, and nothing more for a 5. Texas warns that one of its options does not count toward the core maths requirement, so the choice of course matters there.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the AP Stats curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are estimates, and for Statistics they are more provisional than usual: the May 2027 exam is new, with a different free-response scale, so the 2025 distribution is the only guide to its shape. The lines here reproduce the shape of the 2025 distribution, a wide 1 band and a fifth of students at 5, on the new 100-point composite.
Other published estimates for the old exam put the 5 line lower, in the low to mid 60s. We have not found a College Board scoring worksheet for the revised exam that would settle it, so the sheet keeps 72 and prints the spread here: a composite anywhere from the mid 60s up should be read as a possible 5. The real cut scores are set after the exam and not published.
Questions about the AP Stats exam
- What changed on the AP Statistics exam for 2027?
- Per the College Board page and the 2026-27 course and exam description: 42 multiple-choice questions (was 40) and four 10-point free-response questions each worth 12.5 % (was five short questions plus an investigative task on a 0 to 4 scale). Both sections remain 90 minutes and 50 %.
- Is a calculator required?
- A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected on both sections, per the course and exam description. Formulas and tables are provided.
- Why do so many Statistics students score a 1?
- The published distributions show 23.7 % at 1 in 2025 and 22.3 % in 2024, the highest 1 rate of any AP exam. The College Board does not publish a reason.
- Does AP Statistics replace a college maths requirement?
- At Florida, STA 2023 carries State Core M. At Washington, STAT 290 carries reasoning credit. At Texas, one of the three options (STA 309) explicitly does not fulfil the core maths requirement.
- Can I use a pre-2027 practice exam with this sheet?
- For the multiple choice, scale 40 to 42. For the free response, no: the old questions were scored 0 to 4 holistically and the investigative task counted double, so the point totals do not map onto the new 40.
