Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.

All AP exams

AP Biology is scored half on 60 multiple-choice questions and half on six free-response questions: two long ones worth 9 points and four short ones worth 4, a total of 34. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count and the free-response total and weights them equally.

The long questions are built around experiments. One asks students to interpret and evaluate results, the other to do the same with a graph they draw. Together they are 18 of the 34 free-response points and more than a quarter of the whole composite.

How the AP Bio exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice60 questions · 50 %
Discrete questions and sets of 4 to 5 questions on a shared stimulus. (1 hour 30 minutes)
Section II: Long free response2 questions · 18 of 34 points
Interpret and evaluate experimental results, one with graphing. 9 points each. (1 hour 30 minutes for all six)
Section II: Short free response4 questions · 16 of 34 points
Scientific investigation, conceptual analysis, analysis of a model, data analysis. 4 points each. (shared)

The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the format it has had since the 2020 redesign: six free-response questions with fixed point values, 90 minutes a section, a 50-50 split. The free-response points are not equal in composite terms with the multiple choice: one correct multiple-choice answer is 0.83 composite points, one free-response point is 1.47.

The College Board page says calculators are permitted; the maths is arithmetic and reading graphs, and the chi-square and standard error formulae are supplied.

Worked AP Bio examples

45/60 multiple choice, 24/34 free response
37.5 + 35.3 = 72.8, an estimated 5 with 2.8 points to spare. Three quarters right across both sections is the typical shape of a 5.
36/60, 16/34
30.0 + 23.5 = 53.5, an estimated 3, 2.5 points short of a 4 at 56. Two more free-response points (2.9 composite) would cross; three more multiple-choice answers would too.
Strong lab questions: 30/60, 26/34
25.0 + 38.2 = 63.2, an estimated 4. Half marks on the multiple choice with near-full free response outscores the reverse, because free-response points are worth more each.

How AP Bio scores were distributed

Biology's distribution is a flat hill: 3 is the most common score (27.4 %) but the 4 and the 2 are close behind, and nearly a fifth of students earned a 5 in 2025. The 3-or-higher rate rose two points in a year, to 70.4 %, and the entry grew by 27,000 students; the College Board's July 2025 post names Biology among the five fastest-growing AP courses.

Against Chemistry, Biology has more 5s (18.9 % to 17.9 %) but a lower pass rate (70.4 % to 77.9 %), because more Biology students sit at 1 and 2.

What a AP Bio score is worth for credit

Biology credit is tiered everywhere, and the tiers are steep. At Florida a 3 is the non-majors course, a 4 is the first majors course and a 5 is the full year. Texas is the exception: its credit is the same for 3 and 4, and it warns science majors away from claiming it at all.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. Policies change; check the page linked in the table before you plan a schedule around a score.

How the AP Bio curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 70 % for a 5, 56 % for a 4, 42 % for a 3, were set against the 2025 distribution and the released free-response scoring guidelines, where the two long questions are scored out of 9 on fixed points per part. The College Board does not publish the real cut scores and resets them each year.

Because one free-response point is worth 1.47 composite, a single part of a long question can move a result across a boundary. Anything within three composite points of a line should be read as either score.

Questions about the AP Bio exam

How many points are the AP Biology free-response questions?
34 in total: two long questions at 9 points and four short questions at 4 points, per the College Board exam page. The sheet asks for the total.
Do I need a calculator for AP Biology?
The College Board exam page says calculators are permitted for this exam. The arithmetic is chi-square, standard error and rates, with the formulae supplied on the exam.
What is on the two long questions?
Both are about experiments. One asks you to interpret and evaluate results; the other does the same and requires a graph. Each is scored out of 9.
Is a 3 on AP Biology worth credit?
Yes at all three universities on this page, but for a lower course than a 4 or 5 earns: the non-majors course at Florida, BIOL 161 at Washington, BIO 311C at Texas (which it also gives for a 4).
How does AP Biology compare with Chemistry for a 5?
In 2025, 18.9 % earned a 5 on Biology and 17.9 % on Chemistry. Chemistry's pass rate was higher (77.9 % against 70.4 %).
