The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.
AP Environmental Science is the AP science with the most multiple choice: 80 questions in 90 minutes carry 60 % of the composite, and three free-response questions worth 10 points each carry the other 40 %. The sheet weights the two boxes 60-40.
It is a big exam (245,371 students in 2025) with a distribution that moved sharply when the College Board reset its standards: the 3-or-higher rate rose from 54.1 % in 2024 to 69.2 % in 2025. The College Board published a findings sheet for this exam specifically.
How the APES exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice80 questions · 60 %
- Individual questions plus 3 to 5 sets on quantitative data, 3 to 5 sets on models or maps and 2 sets on text sources. (1 hour 30 minutes)
- Section II, Q1: Design an investigation1 question · 10 of 30 points
- A scenario with a model or visual; identify problems and propose solutions. (1 hour 10 minutes for all three)
- Section II, Q2: Analyse and interpret quantitative data1 question · 10 of 30 points
- A scenario with a table, chart or graph. (shared)
- Section II, Q3: Analyse an environmental problem with calculations1 question · 10 of 30 points
- A scenario with quantitative data that needs arithmetic and unit conversions. (shared)
The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the 80-question, three-question format with its 60-40 split and specifies the three free-response types. The 2025 scoring statistics confirm 10 points per question. With 80 multiple-choice questions each worth 0.75 composite and 30 free-response points each worth 1.33, this is the AP science where multiple-choice volume matters most.
Question 3 always involves calculation, typically energy, population or pollution arithmetic with unit conversions, and students average under half its points: the 2025 means were 5.35, 4.34 and 4.47 of 10 on the three questions.

Worked APES examples
- 56/80 multiple choice, 18/30 free response
- 42.0 + 24.0 = 66.0, an estimated 4. A 5 at 72 needs 6 more points: eight more multiple-choice answers, or four and a half free-response points.
- 64/80, 24/30
- 48.0 + 32.0 = 80.0, a clear 5.
- 44/80, 12/30
- 33.0 + 16.0 = 49.0, an estimated 3 with 5 points of margin. Just over half the multiple choice and 40 % of the free response passes on the 2025 curve.
How APES scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 12.6% | 9.2% |
| 4 | 27.8% | 27.5% |
| 3 | 28.8% | 17.4% |
| 2 | 15.0% | 25.8% |
| 1 | 15.8% | 20.1% |
| 3 or higher | 69.2% | 54.1% |
| Mean score | 3.06 | 2.80 |
| Students | 245,371 | 236,579 |
The 2025 reset moved a quarter of all Environmental Science students up a band. The 3-or-higher rate went from 54.1 % to 69.2 %, the 2 band shrank from 25.8 % to 15.0 % and the 3 band grew from 17.4 % to 28.8 %. The College Board's findings sheet for this exam says the 2021 standard was set by a panel of 8 professors and the 2025 one by 211 professors at 184 institutions, who estimated that 63 % of their own students would earn a C or higher on the AP exam against 85 % who do so in their college courses.
The 5 share rose less than the pass rate, from 9.2 % to 12.6 %, so Environmental Science still has one of the smaller top bands among the sciences.

What a APES score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | Any passing score earns EVR 2001 (3 credits). |
| UT Austin | A 3, 4 or 5 earns GEO 302P. The page notes it does not fulfil the sustainability course required of Environmental Science majors. |
| University of Washington | A 3, 4 or 5 earns ESRM 100 (5 credits), which can count as social science or natural science. |
Environmental Science credit is flat and modest at all three universities: one introductory course for any passing score, and nothing extra for a 5. Texas explicitly stops it counting toward the environmental science major's own requirement.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the APES curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 32 % for a 2, are estimates set against the 2025 distribution; the 2024 numbers would have put the 3 line higher. The College Board's findings sheet gives the standard in words rather than points, so the lines here are reconstructed from the shape of the distribution and the released scoring guidelines, where each free-response question is scored out of 10 on fixed parts.
The College Board sets the real cut scores each year and does not publish them. Within three composite points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the APES exam
- How much of the APES exam is multiple choice?
- 60 %, from 80 questions in 90 minutes. That is the highest multiple-choice weight of any AP science; Biology, Chemistry and the physics exams are 50 %.
- Why did the pass rate jump in 2025?
- The College Board reset the exam's score standard using its evidence-based method. Its findings sheet for Environmental Science says 211 professors at 184 institutions took part, against 8 in 2021, and the 3-or-higher rate went from 54.1 % to 69.2 %.
- What is on the three free-response questions?
- Designing an investigation, analysing quantitative data, and solving an environmental problem with calculations. Each is scored out of 10, per the 2025 scoring statistics.
- Does APES count as a science for college credit?
- It earns a course at all three universities on this page. Washington lets ESRM 100 count as natural or social science; Texas's GEO 302P does not satisfy the environmental science major's sustainability requirement.
- Is there a calculator?
- The College Board exam page says calculators are permitted for this exam and links the policy on approved models. Question 3 always involves calculation with unit conversions.
