The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. Enter each component as a percentage of its maximum; the weights are the published 45 / 20 / 35 split.
AP Seminar is assessed on two performance tasks submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio during the year plus a two-hour end-of-course exam, weighted 20, 35 and 45 %. Parts are scored by College Board readers and parts by the student's own teacher. Because the components are rubric-scored and then scaled, the sheet takes each as a percentage of its maximum rather than a raw point count.
Seminar has the most compressed score distribution of any AP exam: 55.0 % of students earned exactly a 3 in 2025 and only 9.4 % a 5. The College Board has announced a redesign of the course for 2027-28.

The College Board assessment page lists the weights with their sub-splits, and they matter: the two College Board scored written pieces (the 2,000-word argument at 24.5 % of the total and the exam essay at 31.5 %) are 56 % of the score between them. The teacher-scored presentations and defenses add up to 20.5 %.
Task deadlines fall at the end of April, before the May exam; the College Board page lists 30 April 2027 for final submissions. The course is being redesigned for 2027-28, so the format here applies to the 2026-27 year.

- 31.5 + 16.0 + 26.3 = 73.8, an estimated 5. Reaching 70 % of the rubric points on the exam is the hard part; the exam essay alone is 31.5 % of the total.
- Exam 50 %, team task 70 %, individual task 60 %
- 22.5 + 14.0 + 21.0 = 57.5, an estimated 4, which is where many students who do well on the year's tasks but struggle with the timed essay land.

More than half of all Seminar students score a 3 in any given year: 55.0 % in 2025, 56.5 % in 2024. Scores of 1 are rare (4.2 %) and so are 5s (9.4 %, the same in both years). The College Board's July 2025 post names Seminar among the five AP courses that grew the most that year; entries rose by about a third, from 94,394 to 126,001.
The practical reading is that Seminar is easy to pass and hard to ace. A student planning on a 5 is competing for one place in eleven.

What a Seminar score is worth for credit

Seminar credit is general credit or none. Neither Florida nor Washington gives more for a 5 than for a 3, and Texas gives nothing. The score's main use is the AP Capstone Diploma, which requires a 3 or higher on Seminar, Research and four other AP exams.

How the Seminar curve on this sheet is estimated
This is the least certain curve on the site. The College Board scales each Seminar component before weighting it, and no released exam shows the scaled points, so the cutoffs (65 % for a 5, 52 % for a 4, 40 % for a 3) are a plain reconstruction from the published distribution: a 3 band wide enough to hold 55 % of students and a top band that holds under 10 %.
Enter each component as the percentage of its rubric points you expect. The estimate is useful for seeing which component moves the score; it is not a prediction to plan around.
Questions about the Seminar exam
- Who scores AP Seminar?
- Both. The individual research report, the written argument and the whole end-of-course exam are scored by College Board readers. The team presentation, the individual presentation and the oral defense are scored by the teacher using College Board rubrics.
- Can I retake only the exam?
- The score combines the year's tasks and the exam. A student who repeats the course submits new tasks and sits the exam again.
- Why do so many Seminar students get a 3?
- The published distributions show 55 % at 3 in 2025 and 56.5 % in 2024. The components are scaled, and the result is a narrow band of outcomes. The College Board has not published a reason.
- What is changing in the 2027-28 redesign?
- The College Board page says the course is being redesigned to foster and protect writing skills in the age of AI and to serve English classrooms and interdisciplinary electives. Details of the new assessment are not on the page yet.
- Does AP Seminar count toward the Capstone Diploma?
- Yes. The diploma requires a 3 or higher on Seminar and Research and on four other AP exams.
