The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027.
AP Chemistry has the largest free-response section of the AP sciences: seven questions, three long at 10 points and four short at 4, for 46 points in 105 minutes. The 60 multiple-choice questions take 90 minutes. Each section is half the score, and the sheet weights them that way.
In 2025 Chemistry had the highest 3-or-higher rate of any AP science, 77.9 %, and 168,833 students sat it. Its most common score is a 3, closely followed by the 4.
How the AP Chem exam is built
- Section I: Multiple choice60 questions · 50 %
- Discrete questions and sets built on a stimulus or data set. (1 hour 30 minutes)
- Section II: Long free response3 questions · 30 of 46 points
- 10 points each; the questions cover all six course skills, from representing data to argumentation. (1 hour 45 minutes for all seven)
- Section II: Short free response4 questions · 16 of 46 points
- 4 points each. (shared)
The College Board page for May 2027 keeps the 60-plus-7 format and the 50-50 weighting. The College Board page says calculators are permitted for this exam and links its calculator policy for the section-by-section rules. The periodic table and equation sheet are supplied.
With 46 free-response points against 60 multiple-choice questions, a free-response point is worth 1.09 composite and a multiple-choice answer 0.83. The three long questions alone are 30 points, nearly a third of the whole exam.

Worked AP Chem examples
- 42/60 multiple choice, 30/46 free response
- 35.0 + 32.6 = 67.6, an estimated 4, 2.4 points short of a 5 at 70. Three more multiple-choice answers (2.5 composite) or three free-response points (3.3) would cross.
- 50/60, 36/46
- 41.7 + 39.1 = 80.8, a clear 5.
- 32/60, 18/46
- 26.7 + 19.6 = 46.2, an estimated 3 with 6 points of margin. Just over half the multiple choice and 40 % of the free response passes on this curve.
How AP Chem scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 17.9% | 17.9% |
| 4 | 28.6% | 27.4% |
| 3 | 31.4% | 30.3% |
| 2 | 15.9% | 16.9% |
| 1 | 6.2% | 7.5% |
| 3 or higher | 77.9% | 75.6% |
| Mean score | 3.36 | 3.31 |
| Students | 168,833 | 151,121 |
Chemistry's distribution has a high floor: only 6.2 % of students scored a 1 in 2025, and the 3-or-higher rate was 77.9 %, up from 75.6 %. The share of 5s was identical in both years at 17.9 %, so the gain came from the middle, with the 4 band growing from 27.4 % to 28.6 %.
That makes Chemistry the AP science a student is most likely to pass but not the one most likely to ace: Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism had 25.2 % at 5 the same year.

What a AP Chem score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns CHM 1020 and CHM L0001 (4 credits, with State Core P for CHM 1020). A 4 earns CHM 2045 and 2045L (4 credits). A 5 earns CHM 2045, 2045L, 2046 and 2046L (8 credits). |
| UT Austin | A 4 or 5 earns CH 301, 302, 104M and 104N, the full general chemistry year with labs. A 3 earns CH 301N. |
| University of Washington | A 5 earns CHEM 142, 152 and 162 (15 credits). A 4 earns CHEM 142 and 152. A 3 earns CHEM 142. Scores of 3 to 5 also place into honors CHEM 145. |
Chemistry has the most generous top tier on this site: a 5 earns a full year of general chemistry with labs at Florida and Texas and three quarters at Washington. A 3 earns an introductory or non-majors course everywhere. The jump from 3 to 4 is the big one at Texas, where it adds three courses.
Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the AP Chem curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 70 % for a 5, 55 % for a 4 and 40 % for a 3, are estimates reconstructed from the 2025 distribution and the released scoring guidelines, where the long questions are scored out of 10 on fixed parts. The 3 cutoff is low because the published pass rate is high: four students in five pass, and the composite that corresponds to the 20th percentile is well under half marks.
The College Board sets the real cut scores after each exam and does not publish them. Within three composite points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the AP Chem exam
- Can I use a calculator on AP Chemistry?
- The College Board exam page says calculators are permitted for this exam and links the AP calculator policy, which lists the approved models and the sections they apply to. The periodic table and formula sheet are provided.
- How are the 46 free-response points split?
- Three long questions at 10 points and four short questions at 4 points, per the College Board exam page.
- Does a 3 on AP Chemistry get credit?
- At the three universities on this page, yes, but for an introductory course: CHM 1020 at Florida, CH 301N at Texas, CHEM 142 at Washington. The majors sequence starts at a 4.
- Why is the pass rate so high?
- The published distribution shows 77.9 % at 3 or higher in 2025, with only 6.2 % at 1. The College Board has not published a reason; the course usually follows a first chemistry course, so the population is selected.
- How long is the AP Chemistry exam?
- 3 hours 15 minutes: 90 minutes of multiple choice and 105 minutes of free response.
