All AP exams

AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is calculus-based E&M: electrostatics, conductors and capacitors, circuits, magnetic fields and electromagnetic induction. The exam has the same shell as the other AP physics exams, 42 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions worth 40 points, split 50-50.

Only 29,708 students took it in 2025, less than half the Mechanics entry, and they earned a 5 more often than on any other AP physics exam: 25.2 %. The sheet uses the 2025 scoring statistics for the free-response points.

How the Physics C E&M exam is built

Section I: Multiple choice42 questions · 50 %
Discrete questions and sets; calculus is expected, including Gauss's and Ampère's laws in integral form. (85 minutes)
Section II, Q1: Mathematical routines1 question · 10 of 40 points
Derive and calculate from a described situation; the 2025 scoring guidelines give it 10 points. (95 minutes for all four)
Section II, Q2: Translation between representations1 question · 12 of 40 points
Move between diagrams, graphs, equations and words; the longest question at 12 points. (shared)
Section II, Q3: Experimental design and analysis1 question · 10 of 40 points
Plan a procedure, then analyse data or a graph from it. (shared)
Section II, Q4: Qualitative/quantitative translation1 question · 8 of 40 points
Argue in words, then show the same claim in mathematics, or the reverse. (shared)

The College Board page for May 2027 lists 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes and four fixed-type free-response questions in 95 minutes, as on the other three physics exams. The 2025 scoring statistics give the free-response points as 10, 12, 10 and 8.

E&M is the most mathematically demanding AP exam: Maxwell's equations in integral form, RC and LR circuit differential equations and line integrals for induced emf all appear. It is normally taken alongside or after Mechanics and alongside Calculus BC.

Worked Physics C E&M examples

30/42 multiple choice, 24/40 free response
35.7 + 30.0 = 65.7, an estimated 4 by 0.3 points. One more correct answer anywhere would make it a 5.
22/42, 14/40
26.2 + 17.5 = 43.7, an estimated 3 with 5.7 points of margin.

How Physics C E&M scores were distributed

E&M's 5 share dropped ten points in 2025, from 35.2 % to 25.2 %, the biggest fall at the top of any AP exam that year, while the 3-or-higher rate rose slightly from 71.6 % to 72.9 %. Students moved from the 5 band into the 4 and 3 bands: the 3 band grew from 14.8 % to 24.1 %.

Even so, E&M kept the highest 5 rate among the four AP physics exams, ahead of Mechanics (21.7 %), Physics 2 (21.8 %) and Physics 1 (19.8 %).

What a Physics C E&M score is worth for credit

The pattern matches Mechanics: Florida and Washington give the calculus-based course from a 4 and the algebra-based one for a 3, while Texas lists calculus-based options from a 3 with advising. E&M is the exam that completes the first year of engineering physics.

Read from each university's own credit page on 10 Oct 2026: University of Florida, Exam Credit (undergraduate catalog); University of Texas at Austin, Student Testing Services, credit by exam; University of Washington, Advanced Placement exams for credit. How the Physics C E&M curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 66 % for a 5, 52 % for a 4 and 38 % for a 3, are the lowest physics lines on the site, set against a distribution where a quarter of students earn a 5 even after the 2025 fall. They are estimates; the College Board does not publish cut scores, and on an exam of 30,000 students the real boundaries can shift noticeably between years.

Free-response points are 1.25 composite each and multiple-choice answers 1.19. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.

Questions about the Physics C E&M exam

Is E&M harder than Mechanics?
The content uses more calculus (surface and line integrals, differential equations for circuits). The published distributions do not say it is harder to score on: in 2025, 25.2 % earned a 5 on E&M and 21.7 % on Mechanics.
Can I take E&M without Mechanics?
The College Board offers them as separate exams and separate scores. Most courses teach Mechanics first; the universities on this page credit each exam on its own.
What are the free-response questions worth?
10, 12, 10 and 8 points for the four fixed types, per the 2025 scoring statistics. The sheet asks for the total out of 40.
What calculus do I need?
Derivatives and integrals including those of exponentials, for RC and LR circuits, and the integral forms of Gauss's, Ampère's and Faraday's laws. Calculus BC is the usual companion.
Why did the 5 rate fall so much in 2025?
The published distribution shows 25.2 % at 5 against 35.2 % in 2024, the first full year of the revised exam. The College Board's distribution PDF does not give a reason.
