The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. From May 2027 the multiple-choice section has 42 questions (29 without a calculator, 13 with one).
AP Calculus BC uses the same exam shell as AB, 42 multiple-choice questions and six 9-point free-response questions split by calculator use, and adds series, parametric, polar and vector calculus to the content. Students also receive an AB subscore based on the questions that cover AB material.
BC has the most top-heavy distribution of any large AP exam: 44.0 % of the 160,436 students in 2025 earned a 5, and 78.6 % scored 3 or higher. The sheet's estimated cutoffs are the lowest of the four math exams for that reason.
How the Calc BC exam is built
- Section I, Part A: Multiple choice, no calculator29 questions · part of 50 %
- AB content plus series, parametric, polar and vector-valued functions. (62 minutes)
- Section I, Part B: Multiple choice, graphing calculator required13 questions · part of 50 %
- Same content with calculator-dependent numerical work. (38 minutes)
- Section II, Part A: Free response, graphing calculator required2 questions · 18 of 54 points
- 9 points each. (30 minutes)
- Section II, Part B: Free response, no calculator4 questions · 36 of 54 points
- 9 points each; a series question appears every year. (60 minutes)
The College Board page for BC carries the same May 2027 update as AB: 42 multiple-choice questions (29 and 13) with new timing, free response unchanged. The AB subscore is computed from the AB-level questions on the BC exam and reported on a 1 to 5 scale alongside the BC score.
In 2025 the AB subscore distribution was even more top-heavy than the BC score itself: 47.8 % at 5 and 88.0 % at 3 or higher, against 44.0 % and 78.6 % for BC.

Worked Calc BC examples
- 33/42 multiple choice, 40/54 free response
- 39.3 + 37.0 = 76.3, a comfortable 5 with 10 points to spare.
- 25/42, 28/54
- 29.8 + 25.9 = 55.7, an estimated 4. A 5 at 66 needs 10 more points, which is about eight multiple-choice answers or eleven free-response points.
- 18/42, 18/54
- 21.4 + 16.7 = 38.1, an estimated 2, 1.9 points short of a 3. On this exam that student may still earn an AB subscore of 3 if the AB-level questions went better.
How Calc BC scores were distributed
| Score | 2025 | 2024 | 2025 (AB subscore) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 44.0% | 47.7% | 47.8% |
| 4 | 21.9% | 21.1% | 30.5% |
| 3 | 12.8% | 12.1% | 9.8% |
| 2 | 15.2% | 13.9% | 9.0% |
| 1 | 6.2% | 5.2% | 3.0% |
| 3 or higher | 78.6% | 80.9% | 88.0% |
| Mean score | 3.82 | 3.92 | 4.11 |
| Students | 160,436 | 148,191 | 160,436 |
BC's 5 share slipped from 47.7 % to 44.0 % between 2024 and 2025 and the 3-or-higher rate from 80.9 % to 78.6 %, but it remains the most top-heavy of the large AP exams. The College Board's July 2025 post ranks BC first for student satisfaction (8.00 on a 10-point scale).
The AB subscore column shows what the same students did on AB-level material: 88.0 % at 3 or higher. The University of California awards AB credit for an AB subscore of 3 even when the BC score is below 3, and Washington gives MATH 124 for a BC score of 2 with an AB subscore of 3 or higher.

What a Calc BC score is worth for credit
| University | Published policy |
|---|---|
| University of Florida | A 3 earns MAC 2311 (4 credits). A 4 or 5 earns MAC 2311 and MAC 2312 (8 credits), Calculus 1 and 2, with State Core M. |
| UT Austin | A 5 earns M 408C, or M 408K and 408L, or M 408N and 408S, or M 408R and 408L or 408S; the page says to consult an advisor. A 3 or 4 earns M 408C. |
| University of Washington | A 4 or 5 earns MATH 124 and 125 (5 credits each). A 3 earns MATH 124. A 2 with an AB subscore of 3 or higher also earns MATH 124. |
BC is the exam where a 4 pays: Florida and Washington both add Calculus 2 at a 4, and the University of California's systemwide table gives BC twice the units of AB (5.3 semester, 8 quarter). A 3 on BC is treated like AB almost everywhere, and the AB subscore is a safety net at UC and Washington.

How the Calc BC curve on this sheet is estimated
The cutoffs under the sheet, 66 % for a 5, 52 % for a 4 and 40 % for a 3, are the lowest of the math exams because the published distribution puts 44 % of students in the top band; a composite boundary any higher would not reproduce that. They are estimates reconstructed from released exams, and the College Board does not publish the real ones.
Series questions are where BC students lose free-response points, and a free-response point is worth 0.93 composite. Within three points of a line, read the result as either score.
Questions about the Calc BC exam
- What is the Calculus AB subscore?
- A separate 1 to 5 score computed from the AB-level questions on the BC exam, reported with the BC score. In 2025, 47.8 % of BC students earned a 5 on it.
- Does a BC 5 earn more credit than an AB 5?
- Usually. Florida gives 8 credits for a BC 4 or 5 against 4 for AB at any score; Washington gives two courses against one; the University of California gives twice the units.
- What if I score a 2 on BC but a 3 on the AB subscore?
- Washington gives MATH 124 for exactly that case, and the University of California gives AB credit for an AB subscore of 3 regardless of the BC score. Florida and Texas do not list a subscore policy.
- How many questions are on the May 2027 exam?
- 42 multiple choice (29 without a calculator in 62 minutes, 13 with one in 38 minutes) and six free-response questions worth 9 points each, per the College Board page's update note.
- Why is the BC 5 rate so high?
- The published distribution shows 44.0 % at 5 in 2025. BC is usually the second year of calculus for students who did well in the first; the College Board does not publish a reason beyond the distribution itself.
