Estimated curve · 2027

The College Board does not publish cut scores. These are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published 2025 distribution; the real curve moves a few points each year. Weights follow the College Board exam page for May 2027. From May 2027 the multiple-choice section has 42 questions (29 without a calculator, 13 with one).

All AP exams

AP Calculus AB is half multiple choice and half free response, and both halves split again by calculator: 29 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions are done without one, 13 and two with a graphing calculator required. The sheet takes the multiple-choice count out of 42 and the free-response total out of 54.

The College Board has updated the exam for May 2027: 42 multiple-choice questions instead of 45, with new timing. The six free-response questions and their 9-point scoring are unchanged.

How the Calc AB exam is built

Section I, Part A: Multiple choice, no calculator29 questions · part of 50 %
Algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and general functions in analytical, graphical, tabular and verbal forms. (62 minutes)
Section I, Part B: Multiple choice, graphing calculator required13 questions · part of 50 %
Same content; some questions need numerical integration or root finding. (38 minutes)
Section II, Part A: Free response, graphing calculator required2 questions · 18 of 54 points
9 points each. At least two of the six questions use a real-world context. (30 minutes)
Section II, Part B: Free response, no calculator4 questions · 36 of 54 points
9 points each; a roughly equal mix of procedural and conceptual tasks. (60 minutes)

The College Board page says the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing have been updated effective May 2027, following clarifications to the course and exam description; the content has not changed. The new counts are 29 and 13 (previously 30 and 15) in 62 and 38 minutes. The sheet uses the 2027 numbers, so a 2025 or 2026 practice test scored here will read a point or two differently on the multiple choice.

Each free-response question is scored out of 9 on fixed rubric points, which the released scoring guidelines show part by part. A free-response point is worth 0.93 composite; a multiple-choice answer 1.19.

Worked Calc AB examples

30/42 multiple choice, 36/54 free response
35.7 + 33.3 = 69.0, an estimated 5 by 1.0 point. Two thirds right on both sections is the edge of the top band.
24/42, 24/54
28.6 + 22.2 = 50.8, an estimated 3, 3.2 points short of a 4 at 54. Three more multiple-choice answers would cross; four free-response points would too.
The calculator-free day: 20/29 and 8/13 on multiple choice, 12/18 and 22/36 on free response
28 of 42 multiple choice (33.3) and 34 of 54 free response (31.5) give 64.8, a 4. The sheet does not weight the calculator parts separately because the College Board page does not.

How Calc AB scores were distributed

Calculus AB has a hollow middle: in both 2024 and 2025 fewer students scored a 3 (15.0 %) than a 2 (22.8 %) or a 5 (20.3 %). The distribution was almost identical in the two years, with the 3-or-higher rate at 64.2 % and 64.4 % and the mean at 3.21 and 3.22. The College Board's July 2025 table lists AB's 3-or-higher rate as 64 % in both years.

Against Calculus BC the gap is wide: 44.0 % of BC students earned a 5 in 2025 against 20.3 % on AB. The BC exam also reports an AB subscore, on which 47.8 % of BC students scored a 5.

What a Calc AB score is worth for credit

Calculus AB maps to Calculus 1 at every university here, and Florida and Washington do not distinguish a 3 from a 5. Texas does: a 5 earns the faster M 408C, while a 3 or 4 earns a course from the slower sequence. The University of California's systemwide table gives 2.6 semester units (4 quarter units) for AB, half of what it gives for BC.

How the Calc AB curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 68 % for a 5, 54 % for a 4 and 40 % for a 3, are estimates reconstructed from released exams and the published distribution. The 2025 distribution has a fifth of students at 5 and a hollow 3 band, which is why the 5 line sits lower than on most exams while the 3 line is not: on this exam many students cluster just above and just below the 3 boundary.

The College Board sets the real cut scores after each exam and does not publish them. Because the free-response questions are scored out of 9 on fixed parts, one part of one question can move a result across a line; read anything within three composite points as either score.

Questions about the Calc AB exam

What changed for the May 2027 Calculus AB exam?
The College Board page says the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing were updated: 42 questions (29 without a calculator, 13 with) in 62 and 38 minutes. The free-response section is unchanged at six 9-point questions.
How are the free-response questions scored?
Each out of 9 points, on a rubric that awards points for specific steps: setting up an integral, a correct derivative, a justification with units. Partial credit is the norm, which is why the sheet asks for the total out of 54.
Is a 3 on Calculus AB worth college credit?
At all three universities on this page, yes: MAC 2311 at Florida, M 408K (or N or R) at Texas, MATH 124 at Washington. Texas gives the faster M 408C only for a 5.
Should I take AB or BC?
BC covers AB plus series, parametric and polar calculus, and reports an AB subscore. In 2025, 44.0 % of BC students earned a 5 against 20.3 % on AB, but that reflects who takes BC, not an easier exam.
What calculator do I need?
A graphing calculator is required for Part B of the multiple choice and Part A of the free response. It is not permitted on the other two parts.
