How the Music Theory exam is built

The College Board page for May 2027 lists the three sections and the 45-45-10 split, with stimulus music drawn from baroque, classical, romantic, late 19th and 20th century and contemporary (world, jazz, pop) sources. The 2025 scoring statistics give the written questions' points in the order the page lists them: dictations 9, 9, 24 and 24, part writing 25 and 18, composition 9.

The harmonic dictations and part-writing questions carry 91 of the 118 written points. A written point is worth 0.38 composite, a multiple-choice answer 0.6 and a sight-singing point 0.56.

36.0 + 19.1 + 9.4 = 64.5, a 4. The multiple choice and sight-singing can carry a thin written section, but 118 points at 45 % is where most of the composite lives.

How Music Theory scores were distributed

Music Theory's distribution did not move between 2024 and 2025: the mean was 3.01 both years and the pass rate 60.2 % then 60.5 %. The 2 is the most common score (24.7 %), and the 5 and 4 bands are each under a fifth. The 2025 aural subscore (18.8 % at 5, 60.4 % at 3 or higher) and non-aural subscore (17.9 %, 59.9 %) track the composite closely.

The entry fell from 19,045 to 17,799, and the College Board's July 2025 post lists Music Theory among the four AP courses with declining participation.

What a Music Theory score is worth for credit

Music Theory is the one AP where subscores decide credit: Florida's theory course needs both the aural and non-aural subscores at 3 or higher, whatever the composite. The University of California goes the other way and grants credit only for the full exam, none for a subscore alone. Washington tiers its credit by score but in small amounts (1 to 4 credits).

How the Music Theory curve on this sheet is estimated

The cutoffs under the sheet, 72 % for a 5, 58 % for a 4, 44 % for a 3 and 30 % for a 2, are the site's default estimate, applied to an exam whose distribution has barely moved in two years and whose written section is scored on 118 fixed points. They are reconstructions; the College Board does not publish cut scores. The sheet does not compute the aural and non-aural subscores, which the College Board derives from the aural and non-aural items across sections.

Questions about the Music Theory exam

What are the Music Theory free-response questions worth?

9, 9, 24, 24, 25, 18 and 9 points for the seven written questions (118 in total) and 9 for each of the two sight-singing melodies, per the 2025 scoring statistics. The sheet takes the written and sung totals separately.

What are the aural and non-aural subscores?

Two 1 to 5 scores the College Board reports alongside the composite, built from the aural items (listening, dictation, sight-singing) and the non-aural items (notation, part writing). In 2025 both tracked the composite within a point.

Can a subscore earn credit?

At Florida, MUT 1121 requires both subscores at 3 or higher. The University of California grants credit only for the full exam and none for a subscore alone.

How is sight-singing recorded?

Students sing two melodies of 4 to 8 bars, primarily diatonic, into a recording device in about 10 minutes, per the College Board page. It is 10 % of the score.

Why is the pass rate only 60 %?

The published distributions show 60.2 % and 60.5 % at 3 or higher in 2024 and 2025, with a quarter of students at 2. The College Board does not publish a reason; the written section's dictation and part-writing questions are where the 2025 means were lowest relative to their points.
